I had one do the same thing had to replace the +and- wires just inside the case and a capacitor, the top should be broken on the top of the capacitor or maybe just bowed up it was a 1000uF. Pull the cover with the speaker and you will be able to see the problem.

Customer has lost his power supply cord. where can he purchase another cord. power cord is three prongs.

  • Hi, I can help.

  • For the Radio Shack TRC-447 this is just a standard 3 PIN DC cord. Many CB's use the same cord and they are interchangeable. Some Cobra, Uniden, Radio Shack use the same cord. Texxcomm is a great place to get parts from.

First make sure you are grounded well. Second do you have an inline fuse on your power wire? If so check that it did not blow. Even if it looks good throw another 3 amp fuse in to make sure. Also make sure your power source is actually hot and make sure the fuse in the panel fuse box for your power source has not blown. Also are you using the cigarette lighter? If so make sure the fuse to the cigarette lighter has not blown. Last you can try a new power wire. If you try all of these to no avail you more than likely have a radio issue. Good luck.

Take a deep breath and start over! The best way to power this little radio is probably through the cigarette lighter or 12vdc accessory jack. It is simple and straight forward and no fuse box or negative ground wires to worry about. Go the Radio Shack, purchase an adaptor (cig lighter type) and hook it up to your radio wiring being careful to watch polarity. You may have to have your ignition on to run the radio, but that is much safer that maybe blowing up the unit.

Unless you are running a larger more powerful unit or an amp, there is no added benefit to hooking the radio into the fuse box.

I purchased a used Cobra 19 DXIV cb radio that has a black & red wire with a fuse. I was told that the wires can be wired into the fuse box under my dash. How do I do this?

You may need a test light to do this.

1. Decide if you want the power to the radio to be full time or only when the key is on.

2. If you want part time the easiest power source to access is the cigarette lighter. You can either splice into the power wire going to the cigarette lighter (center lead) or you can get a cigarette lighter plug and install it on the end of your two power wires. Center is the positive. The plug costs about $4 and takes about 10 minutes to install.

3. If you want full time you will need to find a circuit that is hot at all times and splice into it.

Use a noise filter on the power as just about all circuits in the vehicle are liable to be noisy power circuits and this will show up in form of excessive static noise during radio operation.

The red with the fuse is your positive lead. Do not hook these up backwards as this will certainly ruin the radio.

Have cobra 29 nw ltd keeps blowing fuses inline and in cigarette lighter adapter adapter is 10 amps and inline is no more than 5 amps

This is an easy fix if you are comfortable soldering.

You must have hooked it up backwards. Big problem when using a cigarette lighter adapter. You have to be careful, if you hook a radio up backwards you blow the polarity protection diode.

  • Go to radio shack and buy an N1004 diode.
  • Open the radio
  • Look towards the back right of the radio for a black diode D23. it will probably look burnt, but not always.
  • Use a soldering wick to remove the solder holding the diode in.
  • Remove it, and replace the diode making sure its going in the same direction as the old on. Strip on the side the triangle is pointing.
  • Solder it in.
  • Test the radio
That should do it.

Make sure you are careful to hook the radio up to power corrctly.

Blowing fuse

Your polarity protection diode has been blown. If you tried hooking up your CB and accidentally pushed the plug in backwards. Inside the radio, there are 2 big black diodes near the transformers, D8 and D23. Replace these with the same or bigger. You can the burnt one out and the radio will work, but if you hook it up wrong again, it will fry the radio.
