Re: Microwave

That's usually a bad magnetron. This one has a 5-year warranty on the magnetron, so you should only have to pay for labor to get it replaced. I would call Maytag at 800-688-1120.

Microwave makes sound like something moving inside

follow this steps and use the VOM , and fix it. God bless you

  1. MagnetronIf your microwave is emanating high pitched or growling noises during operation, the magnetron could be going bad. Normally a nearly silent part, the magnetron uses high voltage and induces the frequency required to cook food. Although normally not a safety hazard to operate, this is a sign that the magnetron is failing and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
  2. Exhaust fan motorIf your microwave is making a very loud humming noise during operation, it could possibly be the exhaust fan motor. If defective the part will need to be replaced to silence the appliance once more.
  3. Stirrer motorAnother leading cause of a noisy microwave is an expired stirrer motor. With use this part becomes worn and makes a loud grinding noise, which is usually a leading indicator that the part needs to be replaced. The stirrer is a metal blade that is slowly turned by the motor. This action disperses the microwave energy in a random pattern, which heats the food evenly. If the stirrer motor is determined to be nearing expiration, it should be replaced to halt the grinding noise.
  4. Turntable motorA very common cause for a noisy microwave is a worn out turntable motor. This is a relatively easy repair and will put an end to the noise once replaced.

Unit makes a lot of noise when cooking.

The exhaust fan may be loose, {check mounts} also, the turnable motor that rotates the plate often gets noisey before seizing, {remove plate to see if noise goes away} and finally the magnetron gets very loud near end of life.

Microwave does not heat. several weeks ago our daughter put an aluminum can in the microwave. it has been working fine but has recently quit. could this be as a result of putting the aluminum can in the mw...

more that likley it burnt out the magnatron
(the bit that heats the food up) its a big radio stashion realy, microwaves are radio waves and bounce off things like tins but they get bounced back at the magnatron and it over heats it till it burns out, the true word is "it ages it" but at the end of the day it just dont work no more,,,to buy a magnatron is not cheap and trying to fit one yourself is likely to kill you first
as there will be 1000's of volts still kicking about inside your microwave in the capacitor witch works just like a police stun gun, however it dont just stun you it could well kill you,, not smart to tuch this bit huh? its far safer to just dump the old one and buy a nice new one,,,but keep the little one's off it this time
im told they take 20 mins per pound to cook them?
i do like children, but iv never eat a hole one yet!

GE JVM1850CH06 microwave no heat with loud humming sound

With the details you described, the high voltage diode might be shorted( usually HVR 1X). It is connected from the Capacitor and the chassis, or else the capacitor is the one at fault, but not common .

Microwave does not heat/cook

power spikes are very damaging to a microwaves internal parts, it sounds like your transformer and/or magnetron are blown. if the unit is out of warranty I would recommend calling a repairman or getting a new microwave (the transformer & magnetron are expensive and dangerous to work on) also get a small single plug surge protector for the new one.
