Question about GE XL1800 1100 Watts Microwave Oven

Turntable does not turn and fan won't exhaust

My wife ran the microwave (GE Spacesaver XL1800) with nothing in it and it started making a loud noise. I shut it off and after that it worked normally but would always make a loud noise when running (like it was working really hard). Now the turntable will not turn and the fan will not work. Although it does seem to start to heat food for the short time I "test" it like this. The entry pad lights and works fine and I just replaced the two fuses inside hoping that might help. They probably weren't even burnt out since I still have the exact same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

My exhaust fan is very loud all of a sudden and sounds like when you blow a belt on a vacuum cleaner. Is it shot or can it be fixed?

The second problem is probably defective door switches, or it may be a problem with the control panel, which we repair nationwide for only $32.50. On my Web site, I have info on safety, disassembly, and diagnosing and replacing door switches: Running it empty has damaged the magnetron. It will work for a while, but it will eventually have to be replaced. A good parts source is here:

GE microwave occasionally buzzes loudly.

make this test and fix it. God bless you

  1. MagnetronIf your microwave is emanating high pitched or growling noises during operation, the magnetron could be going bad. Normally a nearly silent part, the magnetron uses high voltage and induces the frequency required to cook food. Although normally not a safety hazard to operate, this is a sign that the magnetron is failing and will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
  2. Exhaust fan motorIf your microwave is making a very loud humming noise during operation, it could possibly be the exhaust fan motor. If defective the part will need to be replaced to silence the appliance once more.
  3. Stirrer motorAnother leading cause of a noisy microwave is an expired stirrer motor. With use this part becomes worn and makes a loud grinding noise, which is usually a leading indicator that the part needs to be replaced. The stirrer is a metal blade that is slowly turned by the motor. This action disperses the microwave energy in a random pattern, which heats the food evenly. If the stirrer motor is determined to be nearing expiration, it should be replaced to halt the grinding noise.
  4. Turntable motorA very common cause for a noisy microwave is a worn out turntable motor. This is a relatively easy repair and will put an end to the noise once replaced.

GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 microwave turntable

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

On some, you have to cut the motor cover off with snips, then use a screw when reassembling it.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

GE Microwave (JVM1860CD001) control board buzzes.

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
Magnetron If the microwave is loud or noisy only when cooking, the magnetron tube might be defective. The magnetron uses high voltage, high current DC power to generate the microwave frequency that cooks the food. Under normal circumstances the magnetron is nearly silent. However if it is damaged or nearly burned out it can begin emitting high pitched or growling noises. It's not normally dangerous to use a microwave oven when it makes these noises, but they are an indication that the magnetron is almost dead and will need to be replaced.
Exhaust Fan Motor If the microwave is loud when running the fan motor might be
Stirrer Motor If the microwave is loud or noisy the stirrer motor might be worn out. The stirrer is a metal blade which slowly turns around, deflecting the microwave energy in a random pattern inside the microwave oven. As the motor nears the end of its useful life it begins to make grinding noises. The microwave will not heat food evenly without this stirrer, the motor should be replaced.
Turntable Motor If the microwave is loud or noisy the turntable motor might be worn out. This is a common problem and relatively easy to replace.

The turntable on my GE spacesaver xl 1800 stopped turning. The model number is JVM1850BH01 I would appreciate any help.

On this model, the power to the turntable motor ("drive motor") is supplied by a tap (outlet terminal) on the internal cooling fan motor.

The other side of the turntable motor's power is switched on and off by a relay on the control circuit board.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

If the cooling fan is running, but the turntable is not, then it's probably a relay issue or connection which we can repair.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

dee77f7.jpgAt our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

GE spacesaver microwave XL1800, all works but not heating

There are some troubleshooting steps you can take to possibly determine the problem before calling or taking it for service, you need a multimeter and a capacitor discharging tool. if you posses BOTH of these tools,
there are 4 causes for this symptom
1) Transformer
2) Capacitor
3) Diode
4) Magnetron
I can instruct you on how to test and/or replace the first three of these. The magnetron is VERY dangerous and should not be serviced or tampered with except by qualified personel. let me know if you would like to take any of these steps otherwise you could bring it to a repair station.
Hope this helps...Feedback always helps me

My xl1800 spacesaver microwave makes a loud squeaky sound when it's running. When I stop it I can hear the spinning slowing down and the sound goes away until I restart it. I'm afraid that it may blow up....

HI, this may be just an isolated issue that concerns the integrity of the fan housing, or fan itself. the motor may be failing slowly. A mis-aligned fan shroud can cause this as well.

I recommend removing the cover to check for any visible signs of misalignment around the fan housing. if the housing is not shifted or loose, the fan motor will be the culprit.

Have it replaced asap, in this case.

GE XL 1800 quit heating

I don't like to pass on your problem but it sounds very much like either the high voltage supply ot the magnetron has bit the dust.
Either one would make the repair marginal at best.

This is apparently not a very good unit, many microwaves jsut kind of fade away as their magnetron emissions decay.

This one seems to have a bad rep. look at this link:

Sorry, have owned a lemon or two myself.
