A) [even though it is not necessary] before OS installation you might want to remove everything off your HD, including formatting info ~ that part can be done with Win98 boot disk and FDISK utility

b) XP start-up disks [a whole set] are available for download on Microsoft support site; also search this forum for thread on that and direct link

c) HP doesn't actually make HDs; if anything they will stick their label on it, so I would write down model number and serch the web based on that. Once you have the OEM manufacturer you can use links on this site to get the utilities.

d) even though you bought this PC second hand, you should be still able to get some support from HP; if you have to go and re-register it with your name drop the purchase part, and rather go with 'it was given to me by my older brother' story. a) a quick note on XP start up disks - sets for Home and Pro are different, so make sure that you have a right one.

b) formatting can be used for quick removal of pre-existing data, however many users have found that wiping the HD with manufacturer's utilities solves some headaches that might show-up later

c) FDISK command utility can be used to remove any and all formatting info ~ so from logical structure point of view your disk returns to out-of-the-box state. Manufacturer's utility disk will do the same.

Fdisk utility is usually included on majority of boot disks. Check BootDisk.com. For usage do a search on the web - plenty of info there

Model xe320 pc very slow

Technical specs say the highest operating system for that model is Windows XP. If you recently upgraded, that's what you'll get. Adding more RAM can help, but won't solve much based on the processor speed.

If you haven't done a thing to the operating system, the hard drive could be too full or you could have malware/spyware etc.

Do a search for super antispyware. Great free program!

WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MY PC CONFIGURATION

If you are using Windows XP, then go to All Programs, click on Run. Type "dxdiag" in the blank space and hit Enter. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, then click on the Search Programs and Files and type Run then click on Run. Now follow the same instructions as above. You should preferably select NO option to "Check the Drivers Digitally Signed or not". Now you can check all the configuration of your system.

Search window opens when not doing a search

That is a sure sign of an infection.
First of all perform all the Windows updates.
Second, run your AV program, an antispyware, and hijacker programs.

Its going to be lenghty and tedious job, but necessary if you want to keep your information.

Another solution could be make a backup of all your data, and format and reinstall your OS.

Don't forget to rate this answer if it helps.

Hp vectra vl wont start xp, keeps trying to start over

Could you explain what are you booting from if like you said "no disk drive on this". What was the last thing the member of your family does on that PC? Any new installed programs, or hardware? Does the PC restarts itself after that "full circle" or stays frosen?
