DVD Drive has disappeared

Just purchased two Toshiba Satellite L355D laptops one week ago. One is good so far; the other on the second day no longer recognized the CD drive. It has disappeared. Can't use the recovery disk because it doesn't recognize the CD drive.

I got that same problem, around the same time you did. I called TS and they had me download the newest Vista patches. Not sure why I hadn't updated them already, but there were like 28 I had to get. After that, my internal DVD drive instantly reappeared.

If the laptop doesn't recognize the cd drive at the BIOS level, which is where you'd be booting of the recovery disk, it is probably a bad drive. When booting up the laptop, access the BIOS to see if the laptop is detacting the cd drive. To do so, right after you start the laptop, look for some wording that says something like press a certain key to acces the CMOS/BIOS/System configuration. Usually it will be something like F1, F2, F8, F10, or the delete key. Once in the BIOS, there will be a section that lists the detected drives. Check that the CD drive is detected. Even if this drive is detected, it still may be a bad drive. If the laptops are identical, you may be able to swap the cd drives between the laptops. I tried looking up instructions, but the model number provided didn't come up on Toshiba's website. You can look it up yourself if you find the correct model number. Look on the label on the back of the laptop.

Toshiba satellite c855-s5315 reset help please

This sounds like you have corrupt files in storage.
If you have made a boot disk or flashed a usb flash drive with the operating system, you may be able to recover your disk integrity.
If not and you cannot complete the steps below, contact TOSHIBA
Hope this helps
1. Type in the words "recovery media creator" anywhere on this screen. As you start typing the Windows 8 Search box will open.
2. As you type the name of the app you will see an app list show up onthe left
3. Click on the "recovery media creator" app
. Select [Yes] to allow the Toshiba App to make changes to this computer
5. Insert a DVD in your disc drive and select [Create]
6. You will prompted to insert a disc after each one is filled until the completion message below appears
7. Select [OK]

Can i replace a toshiba l355-s7901 motherboard with a toshiba l355-s7915 motherboard

Going out on a limb here, but I'm going to state yes, except the s7901 has hot keys in the center strip under the LCD screen. Above the Keyboard, where the Power On button is located. The s7915 doesn't.

Toshiba Satellite l355-s7901,

You can click on the photos towards the bottom to enlarge.

Toshiba Satellite l355-s7915,

Same with the photos at the bottom.

I know this doesn't seem like a very professional answer/solution, but in viewing both of the laptops the ports, (USB, DC Power Jack, etc.), and the peripherals, (DVD optical drive, add-in card drive, etc.), seem to be in the same place.

Viewing a Service Manual for the Toshiba Satellite l350 series of Notebook PC's, shows removal procedures to be the same across the board, no matter what model deviation it is.
As long as it's one of the Satellite l350 series.

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-toshiba

Go down to the second Satellite file header. The one that starts with Satellite A10.
Now go down to the second line, and then go across to L350, and click on it.

This is a PDF file. May take up to 30 seconds before you see the first page, and additional time to fully download.

Do I know for a fact they will interchange? No, I do not.
I'm willing to bet strongly that they will.

Toshiba Satellite P105-s6147 CD/dvd drive some how uninstalled

Registry edits not usually a good idea. System restore is your friend. Some DVD burning apps will change your registry and cause the CD/DVD to disappear. Uninstall the new burning app, or system restore to a time you know it was working.
