When and How Should a Surge Protector Be Used on a Fixed Switch?

Common Causes of Lightning Strikes
  • Outdoor network cables or power cables are routed overhead.
  • A switch is deployed outdoors but is not properly grounded.

Damages of Lightning Strikes
  • If power cables of a switch are routed overhead in an outdoor environment, lightning strikes may burn the power supplies.
  • If network cables of a switch are routed overhead in an outdoor environment, lightning strikes may burn interfaces of the switch.
When a switch undergoes lightning strikes, overvoltage is induced by lightning on network cables and transmitted to interior of the chassis. The surge protection measures, such as lightning rod and chassis grounding cannot prevent the damage. Therefore, surge protectors or surge protection circuits are recommended.

Surge Protector Use Precautions Take the following precautions to protect a switch from lightning:
  • Ensure that the ground cable is connected to a ground bar or a ground point on the cabinet.
  • Avoid routing cables overhead in an outdoor environment. Bury cables underground or route them in steel tubes.
  • To protect network interfaces against lightning, use 8-line surge protectors (or Huawei certified 4-line surge protectors).
  • When installing a network interface surge protector, connect the IN end to terminals and the OUT end to network interfaces of the switch.
If a fixed switch is installed in a network box, follow these instructions:
  • Connect the ground cables of the switch and surge protectors to the ground bar in the network box.
  • The maximum length of a ground cable cannot exceed 40 cm, and a length of smaller than 15 cm is recommended.
  • If the network box is located outdoors and power cables are routed aerially over a long distance (more than 300 m) to the network box, it is recommended that you install a power supply surge protector in the network box. The decoupled power cable must be at least 3 m long

Lightning strike near house. Power surge came through phone line and ethernet cable. lost modem, computer, time machine, house security system, and HP Officejet 6310xi. When printer is connected to power...

From your description the HP printer is damaged beyond repair, when a lightning strike occurs it also went through the power supply affecting the main board and destroying ic's and other parts. It is more than likely the interface cord from the computer to the printer also took a jolt hitting the printer from both sides finishing off any chance of recovery, you would be further ahead replacing the item.

Copier will not turn on....had a storm and power outage earlier this week. Brother MFC-6490CW.

Seems the is an internal problem due to overvoltage. This could be caused due lightning.
If you are lucky only an internal fuse is blown. Else the power supply is gone ... In the worst case also other electronic parts are damaged.

In the past I have scammed pictures and documents

the printer shuts off due to two reasons. either the power cord to the printer is connected loose or the power cord is connected properly but its getting short.and the other possibility is that there is a power supply board in the printer.on that board there are many tiny electrical components.out of that tiny electrical components any of the component is got weak.so due to this the power supply board gets overheated after sometime and it shuts off automatically to save whole board from getting short.in this case the internal power supply board needs to be checked. ------ Now for the scan failed error.the printer shows this error due to problem in the scanner .in the scanner under the glass there is a mini light that glows.under that light there is a mini green color board.if that board is got shorted then this error can show.as you mentioned that printer shuts off automatically.so this problem can be linked with this scanner failed error.i will explain how it links. the scanner board in the printer receives power from power supply board of the printer.if the power supply board is getting overheated.that this will cause the scanner board to get overheated and short.as both the board are internally connected by a white color 8 pin cable.so in this case the power supply board and scanner board needs to be checked. there can be two possibilities in this case.either there will be lot of expense for this repairing.or it will be very minor problem.if a one single small component blows on power supply board then also the board gets over heated. but if that one component has made short to other connected component.then in some cases whole board needs replacement. so if one component problem then it will hardly cost you any.but if board replacement then its cost will be near tonne printer. also the new boards don't have any guarantee but whole new printer has at least one year warranty. as this all repairing needs a proper technician for checking and confirming the fault. so before getting any repairing done.get the proper cost estimate before getting it repaired. This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Power supply not working

Hello my friend, if one of your power supply's part is burned, your power supply won't work else if its work i has a short time to operate and it will be burned the whole board of your supply. Mainly the reason of burning your supply are the following: 1. The Electric supply  from the source is to high or above the limitation of your Power supply. 2. Your power supply is over capacity. 3. You're power supply board develop a liquid moisture inside that is why it shorted and eventually the board is burned.  4. The load of your power supply is overload due to some device you attach that is beyond to the limit of your power supply's wattage capacity.
Note: try to see the wattage or voltage or the capacity of your power supply can supply the electricity within your computer system. To ensure that it does not exceed the limit of your power supply's limitation.  I therefore reccomend that to avoid burning the entire power supply board from short circuit, it is recommended to replace your power supply to avoid incidents may arise.
Hope this advice helps your problem. If you need more assistance just reply to this post.  If this solution or recommendation is able to solve or help your problem then please rate it.  Thanks

After lightning struck in my backyard, printer won't turn on.

HI, this was an unfortunate surge that has fried the power board Assembly in this unit. it has also fried the main control. this may be a total loss unless, you are considering replacing the entire mother board and power assembly as well.

Replacing the main control board and power board will restore proper function.

Epson Stylus photo 1400 power kncked out by lightning

I think you can probably guess the answer to this one... If the power supply is blown then it's highly likely that the circuit board in the rest of the printer have taken a hit too.

I'd recommend contacting Epson and seeing if they can offer you a trade in or a refurb, especially if you're under warranty...

Sorry I can't provide more help that's immediately useful.

Unfortunately, no power is no power. The power supply may be damaged. The only solution would be to get the unit serviced.
