Question about Sony CDX-M8815X CD Player

Illumination not working when faceplate is open.

I notice that my illumination is not on when the faceplate is open but the unit still works. I also closed the face plate and same result. this is while driving. Got home and turned off the car and turn the key back on to ACC position and noticed the faceplace briefly light up then turn off when fully opened. I closed and the illumination stayed off but the unit was still playing. I cannot see display status. So, I tried another approach. This time I set the unit so the face would stay closed. I turned on the car key to the ACC position and the system turned on with illumination. I was then able to see the display. Using the remote, I openned the face plate again to change the cd and the unit illumination turn off again. I inserted another cd and it played.

Re: Illumination not working when faceplate is open.

Wire braid out to the faceplate has got a parcially broken wire on it. Sony referes to it as a flexible circuit board. Part can be purchased from sony directly, an on a one to 10 scale to replace about a five. But it does involve taking your radio apart. So if you are handy at electronics. you can look it over. If you have doubts let a professional do it.

I have a 1991 ford festiva i changed my radio and now my shifter and my dash lits dont work are they wired in with the factery radio

Hi, the factory radio uses the illumination wire, but the aftermarket radio does not. You have to make sure that wire is taped off so it doesn't short the illumination circuit. Check your tail lights fuse. If it's blown, pull the head unit and disconnect/tape off the illumination wire (blue with a white stripe) from the factory harness. Then put in a fresh fuse. If you have more questions, please specify the model of the head unit.

My pioneer deh 9300 comes on but the faceplate wont do anything. What could it be?

The first thing to do is to clean the contact points on the faceplate and the
chassis. Use a toothbrush, if there's corrosion, or even dust build up it can have an effect on functionality. If it's still out, check the illumination fuse behind the unit. My memory is a little vague however I think the illumination lead is orange on Pioneer. If it's still inop, slide the unit out and take it to a local car audio shop to be bench tested. Leave the harness in the car. If they sell pioneer, they will have one to use. Hope this helps

Got power to cd but no display

One idea that comes to mind is,if I remmeber correctly, that model has a removeable faceplate, try this, remove the faceplate, take some denatured alcohol on a Q-tip,clean the electric contacts on the back of the faceplate and also on the front of the deck where they mate together repeatedly for about 4 to 6 times letting them dry between each time that you swab them clean, then replace the faceplate onto the deck being sure that you are seatting the faceplate completely and properly.
This has worked for me sometimes and sometimes not, its worth a try.
Good Luck !

KDC MP242 faceplate will not light. I have the unit run directly through the car vehicle battery for power. The CD player will accept and eject a disk, so I know the unit is getting power. However, I...

Im not sure if this is gonna fix your problem because im not exactly sure what you mean when you say you ran the player directly to the battery....but if the faceplate is not lighting up then it is possible that you may have not connected some of the wires properly. Some head units come with illumination wires which I believe are usually orange and that could fix the problem of the faceplate not lighting up....I hope that you are not actually running it straight to your under your hood, straight to your battery. I would imagine that you have purchased the proper wire harness and have matched the wires properly in the dash to the radio harness. If you do not have all of the wires hooked up and the harness plugged in to the radio and ready to go like your gonna put it in the dash to bolt it in then do that. Hook everything up properly with the wires and the harness so its like its ready to be bolted in and then test it...if the faceplate is still not lighting up then you may need to bring it somewhere to have it done professionally or if you are confident you are doing everything properly then it could be a faulty screen. I can add that I have installed many radios and had have lots that I have not needed a use of that orange illumination wire for.....its pretty straight forward just matching the colors and connecting them...but if you have never done it then you should probably take it somewhere, just not sure if you have ever done it before. Hope this was helpful to you.. :) Good Luck!

My Sony CDX-C680...

Hello greggerika,

It's possible that the "illumination" wire is not connected or connected improperly. It's also possible that the front panel electrical connections are not making proper contact. Remove the front panel and gently clean the contacts with a pencil eraser.

Also, the CDX-C680 allows you to select either green or amber illumination. One or the other may be defective. Try changing it. Press SHIFT - press "3" (set up) three times - press "5" (right arrow) to change the setting. Also check the setting for "dimmer". ON will result in a dimmed display at all times. AUTO will dim the display whenever the headlights are turned on (if the wiring is connected properly). OFF will result in the brightest display at all times.

Hope this helps.

No back light on display

I know that most Clarions have an "illumination" wire usually orange and or orange/white. If the unit only has one, then most likely it is for a "dimmer circuit" and not atraight illumination. Let me know. If by putting power on tat orange wire does not do it, then you have a bad "bulb" in the faceplate.

Illumination v. Dimmer

Good day,

The illum wire goes directly to the headlight switch and tells it when to light up, where as the dimmer wire is variable meaning it would dim up or down with your dash light control. Dimmmer is usually only need on factory radio's and not aftermarket. I suggest wiring only to the illuum lead and do not connect dim. Also about the clock make sure your red and yellow wires are not crossed, yellow is a constant hot and red is only hot when the ignition is on, so if they are backwards the radio would loose it's memory when you turn the key off.

Hope this helps
