Question about Harman Kardon AVR 510 Receiver

1 Answer

Shuts off about 5 sec. after i turn it on

My AVR510 shuts off about 5 sec. after i turn it on. I should tell tou a little more about the original problem. It had been humming louder and louder over the last few months and video also had some rolling noise. I opened it up and found a Cap (6800uf 16v) with an almost blown top.I replaced it.(c487) Now it powers up for only 5 secounds then shuts itself down. In that 5 secounds for the last 2 secounds you can see video and hear a little sound before it shuts down. It was very easy to replace the cap. and i double checked the polarity . I went over a few questionable solder joints too. At least the hum is gone. I tried the reset too, didnt do any good. thanks Dan

My friend kept turning it up and i kept turning it back down then it just said poweroff

Sounds like your "friend" has cooked something. It could be one of your speakers (do they all sound ok for the 5 seconds it runs?), or it could be the receiver....
I would try disconnecting all the speakers and see if it stays on. If so, it may be one of the speakers. Connect them one at a time, and see if you can tell.

System shuts off within seconds of turning on and fan starts

Motherboards are designed so that holding in the power button for 4-5 seconds shuts the system off. The On/Off key getting stuck or something shorting the pins on the motherboard that the On/Off switch is connected to can cause this behavior.

Open the case and remove the little two wire connector (usually one red and one black wire) that runs from the motherboard to the front panel switch. Then carefully touch both the pins on the motherboard at the same time with something made of metal such as a paperclip or small screwdriver, remove it as soon as the computer starts to power up. If it still shuts off, you probably have a motherboard malfunction. If it starts normally, the switch needs to be replaced/repaired.

It shuts off afer 5 seconds when powered on.

Does the unit output sound when powered on? If no sound can be heard, and you only hear a click after 5 sec. then your power circuit may have a faulty diode.

Start up it gets to receiver on the displayit shuts off and Power indicator starts fashion red to green

Having too loud sound cannot damage the unit, the loud maximum sound is design for that unit, when its brand new one or 2 years old its okey. But when 2 to 3 or more years when voluming the maximum the it create a vibration that cause the "solder crack" and results intermittent sound goes on, goes off, that is your problem. You open the unit and got to supply section reheat or resolder the resistor, capacitor diode, transistor and most of all switching IC. when finish, go to audio section, do what u did in the supply section.Bear in mind not tosolder it causes trouble. When reheat all the solder, your unit is good as new.

Well usually the best thing to do is unplug the unit from any power and leave it for about 2 hours to reset. that is a common problem when the unit has been played at a high volume or the speaker connection are not tight

Power shuts off after 2 or 3 sec.

please remove all speaker from receiver-volume down and test if the receiver shut down it needs to fix in service center-if not insert speaker one by one until you find the bad one-change its cable first and then change speaker itself.
