Code 39 on DVD Philips SDVD8821

Internal DVD drivers won't load & DVD won't work. On the device manager it indicates that the windows cannot load the drivers for this hardware due to the driver may be corrupt or missing. (Code 39). Can u help with this problem as I've tried Microsoft and they have said it is the manufacturer problem and I can't contact ACER to report the problem,but they have no contact address, email address or phone number to call on their website.

Typically you don't need any special driver to use a DVD drive. Windows loads generic Microsoft drivers for all optical drives.

To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:
NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.
1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE     * SYSTEM     * CurrentControlSet     * Control     * Class     * {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
    * UpperFilters     * LowerFilters     * UpperFilters.bak     * LowerFilters.bak
5) If  any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer
8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Hi there.
If its Vista you are using, right click on "computer", select "manage" a window will pop up, select "device manager" you will now see a list of devices, look down the list and locate the CD/DVD Rom, click on the + icon next to the CD/DVD, right click on it and select "uninstall". restart the machine and load windows up as usual, the drivers for the CD/DVD will install automatically and you should be able to use the CD/DVD Rom.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!!

hi, I have scoured the internet and this worked for me

Fixing Code 39 Error
If your CD-ROM drive is not visible in My Computer, you may see the following error message displayed with the CD or DVD drive item in your Device Manager. (Steps to open Device Manager are discussed later in the article.)
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
Using Device Manager
To fix this error, first try to update the driver from the Device Manager. To open Device Manager, right-click My Computer on your Desktop, and then on the Hardware tab, select the Device Manager button.
In the Device Manager window, identify the CD or DVD drive item (with Yellow exclamation mark), right-click on it and select Update Driver. Follow the screen instructions to update the device driver and restart your PC.
Using Registry Editor
If updating the driver does not resolve the problem, it indicates that there is a problem in the registry. To fix this problem, you may have to remove a few keys from the registry.
Note: Be careful while working with the registry editor because changes done to the registry using the Registry Editor are irreversible and mistakes can leave you with more problems than when you started. Therefore, it is recommended that you make a backup of the registry before proceeding with the changes.
After you have removed the registry keys listed below, you will have to reinstall all applications that you use for CD or DVD recording to make them work properly.
To fix the error by editing the registry, perform the following steps:
  1. Exit and close all applications currently running on your PC.
  2. On Start > Run type Regedit and press the Enter key.
  3. Next, navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  4. Delete any of the following registry entries if they exist under this key:
    • LowerFilters
    • LowerFilters.bak
    • UpperFilters
    • UpperFilters.bak
  5. Restart your PC and open My Computer to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is visible.
  6. Also, open the Device Manager again to ensure that the yellow exclamation mark and the error code is now gone.
  7. Restart your PC and open My Computer to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is visible.
  8. Also, open the Device Manager again to ensure that the yellow exclamation mark and the error code is now gone.

It sounds complicated but it was actually quite simple, just make sure you delete the right files.

Hi, the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive is a known issue from Microsoft. The error code means "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)".
Since you are using a Toshiba laptop; you can click on this link http://tinyurl.com/toshibadvd and click on the repair tool on the resolution. This is applicable on both Windows Xp and Vista and will delete the upper/lowerfilters on the registry.

In case that the error code still exist you need to manually delete the upper/lowerfilters under the registry by clicking on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us . You need to go the "Run" screen then type in "regedit" and click OK or hit the enter key.

This will surely fix the error code that you have on the CD/DVD drive.

Thanks

Solution to this problem would be to either one track down the drivers on ACER website it should be there!
Or finde the part you are trying to get the drivers for online:
You do not have to go to Microsoft website for drivers
Google the device and drivers or go onto Philips website under support!
