It could be that a partition has not been created on your usb drive, connect to your USB port and go to Disk Management in XP:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view.
Locate your new drive on there and do the following:

  1. In the Disk Management window, complete one of the following procedures, and then continue to step 2:
    • To create a new partition, right-click unallocated space on the basic disk where you want to create the partition, and then click New Partition.
    • To create a new logical drive in an extended partition, right-click free space on an extended partition where you want to create the logical drive, and then click New Logical Drive.
  2. In the New Partition Wizard, click Next.
  3. Click the type of partition that you want to create (either Primary partition, Extended partition, or Logical drive), and then click Next.
  4. Specify the size of the partition in the Partition size in MB box, and then click Next.
  5. Decide whether to manually assign a drive letter, let the system automatically enumerate the drive, or do not assign a drive letter to the new partition or logical drive, and then click Next.
  6. Specify the formatting options you want to use by using one of the following procedures:
    • If you do not want to format the partition, click Do not format this partition, and then click Next.
    • If you want to format the partition, click Format this partition with the following settings, and then complete the following procedure in the Format dialog box:
      1. Type a name for the volume in the Volume label box. This is an optional step.
      2. Click the file system that you want to use in the File system box.

You can change the disk allocation unit size, and then specify whether to perform a quick format, or enable file and folder compression on NTFS volumes.
      Click Next.

  7. Confirm that the options that selected are correct, and then click Finish.

I have a Emachine T5212 and im trying to reformat my hard drive but my internal dvd drive is not recognized.I brought an external dvd drive, but everytime i try to erase my hard drive it tries to load from...

First you need to have media ready to install once format is compelte.

You can not format a drive you are currently using an operating system unless you run the operating system setup disc in which case you would be booting and running from cd once you start reloading you main drive.

So if you are loading windows .
Review steps below if when you boot you do not have option to select boot device

Boot you laptop / pc and get into the BIOS
<normally f2 or f8 , f12 depending on system.>

Change the BOOT order to cdrom as primary \ you may see the device as USB CD/DVD rom with the actual name of brand there.

Save and exit

Have operating system in cd/dvd rom attached to device

Once it starts to load you will see BRIEFLY in the upper left corner PRESS ANY KEY TO LOAD FROM CD ROM or something similar... stop reading this and press a key ........

From there it should prompt you for setting up a new os, I prefer linux myself but in windows or linux in the setup process you have the option of just loading the operating systems or DELETING THE PARTITIONS and FORMATTING the drive, therefore wiping i .

NOTE: THIS IS NOT WIPING YOUR DATA, if you are trying to hide something, wipe from your drive past **** you never wanna share with anyone again..... repost under how do i wipe my hard drive clean .. its a completely different story .. not hard but different.

Hard disk

Before formatting the drive, be sure to back up any data from the external hard drive that you want to keep. If you want to make your external hard drive bootable, make sure the "File System" option on the "Format" screen matches your operating system. For Windows XP, the file system should be NTFS, while for Windows 98, it would be Fat 32.
Step1 Attach the external hard drive to your computer with the supplied cables. Most modern external hard drives are attached via one of the USB ports on your computer. Older drives may be attached via either the serial port or the parallel (or printer) port.
Step2Click on "My Computer" to see if your computer recognizes that the drive has been installed. If the drive is not showing, reboot your computer and check again. Step3Right-click on the letter that corresponds to your external hard drivemag-glass_10x10.gif. This will most likely be the letter "E" or higher, as your primary drive will be "C" and your CD or DVD drive will be "D." Step4Click on "Format" from the option screen that is displayed. Step5Choose the options you want from the "Format" screen. In most cases, the first three options should be left as is. You can give the drive a volume name in the text box that is provided, if you desire. Step6Click on the "Start" button to begin the process. When the formatting is complete, the external hard drive will be ready for use.

Hi, I have a computer into which I want to boot without the Hard Drive using a Pen Drive. I tried PortableApps application installed in my 8 GB Flash Drive and unable to boot with it. The Operating System...

Your pen drive needs a boot sector and an operating system.

1.) Format the Pen Drive using HP format tool found HERE. It's a 2 MB download. There is also a link to Windows98 system files. You need those if you want to boot your computer in MS DOS from your pen drive. The above method will not let you read/write to NTFS drives.

2.) If you want to boot a semi-functional windows from your pendrive you need "BART's PE Builder" found HERE, and a windows instalation CD (the list of supported Windows versions is found on the same site). "Barts pebuilder" is designed to create bootable live windows CD-s for system administrators and "geeks", there is a small .BAT file in it that installs it on your pen drive. Read a few readme files and follow the instructions on the web site.

3.) If you want to boot Linux from your pen drive visit this web site http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

HP DV9200 series AMD Cant recognize new samsung 500 Gb hard drive, is there a boot able patch to run for BIOS currently have F.40 Bios.

F.40 is the latest bios for this system (it just came out Aug 2008).

If you have one of the model that supports 2 drives and the problem is that it does not show up in windows, you probably don't have a bios problem.

Right click on My Computer - or just Computer if you have Vista
Select Manage
A Computer Mangerment windows will open.
Click on Disk Management
The attached drives will now appear on the right.
Do you see an unidentified drive, no drive letter etc?
Right click on it and initialize the drive, now create a partition and format the drive.
You can also assign it a drive letter.

Now you should be able to see the drive in My Computer (or Computer)

Hi, I get an error message when I try to connect and install a Maxtor 500 GB external hard drive to my computer. The message reads "the device cannot start (Code 10). Can you assist?

What is the error message you get?

What OS are you using?

Depends on your hard drive, some computer commonly ask for a driver when you plug something in it. might as well try reading the manual of your external hard drive, if it doesn't require a driver, then the problem "might" be in your operating system and/or in your computer.

How to detect two IDE drives with same brand

You need to set one of the drives to be 'master' and the other to be 'slave'.
This is done by positioning jumpers on the back of the harddrives.
Pretty sure that on the drives is explained somewhere how to position the jumper, for several options.

Good luck,
Please post some feedback.
