Lamp are pretty easy to change. Your lamp is mounted in the front of the TV.
On the back side of the T by the screen you will have 2 big plastic screws. You need to unscrew them. You might need to use a quarter to get them started.
Once the screws are loose then you need to go to the front of the TV and pop out the bottom front panel. This is where the power light is. Don't be afraid to apply pressure when trying to pop it out.
Once the panel is off you will see a door with another plastic screw.
Open the door and you will see the lamp. The lamp will either be screwed in or held in by a latch.
Remove the lamp and insatlee the new lamp.
Reassemble everything and turn the TV on
Go into the user menu and reset your lamp timer and you are done.
Good luck to you.

I still had both pieces of felt on mine and it failed like that. I took Ross' advice and just put a piece of electrical tape over both pieces of felt, a bit more than twice as big as what he suggested, and it worked fine. Easy access for me was to remove one of the back panels (4 screws) and then turn the unit on and then off when I saw the felt (in your case it may be where the felt used to be).

Thanks Ross. I found this thread by clicking on windledom in a different thread.

It sounds like your Lamp is bad, part number XL2100.

To replace Lamp:
1) Loosen the screws on rear panel (2 thumb type screws on either side of TV, just behind front panel/spreaker grill).
2) Remove front panel.
3) Loosen the screw with coin or similar object to remove Lamp cover (near left hand side).
4) Loosen the 2 screws that hold the Lamp, then pull out Lamp. Don't force Lamp it should go in easy.
5) Replace the new Lamp and tighten the screws, reattach Lamp cover & tighten screws.
6) Reattach front panel cover.
7) Tighten screws for front panel cover in it's place.

Good Luck, Big Irish.

Part number for this model (2004 model) is: A1606-034B ---IT IS ALSO CALLED A XLU2100U and retails from Sony for $200 although you may be able to find it on the internet for less.

First: have the set turned off and then unplug:

The front grill under the screen has to be removed; you will find on either side on the back a single plastic black wheel you can back out by hand.

The front grill pops out(they do not come out gently) start on one side and pop it out from the pegs that hold it in.

Behind the grill is a plastic door marked and held in with a screw. Remove the the door and you will see the square black cartridge with a handle----it is secured in place by two allen bolts that you back out until they are free. grasp the handle and the lamp will pull out(a new lamp from sony comes with the allen wrench included.

MAKE SURE YOU GET A ORIGINAL SONY LAMP--the generic ones on the internet are no bargain.

I do this here for free so if this helps you give me a vote here.

Changing the Lamp

Hi, they are all a little different but 95% of all Sony`s require you to remove the plastic panel just below the bottom of the screen, your owners manual has the procedure, if you don`t have it you should download it from the sony site. Basically there are either velcro or long plastic plugs that hold the plastic panel into the set, be sure to check for several screws that sometimes need to be removed just behind the bottom front cover, hard to explain over the internet, best to get the owners manual and follow the correct procedure for your model, hope this helps, video-tek

I have the same dryer doing the same thing. Open the door and take the two screws out and lift the top. Remove the two screws that hold the front on. Remove the front. On mine both the plastic parts that stay on the front when it is removed are cracked and needing replaced. I found over 20 buttons that the dryer had pulled off clothes stuck in the front door. I'm sure if it will be cost effective to buy both these parts or not.

Replacing Lamp

you're supposed to loosen the 2 big plastic looking screws on the bottom back of the screen. there should be one on the bottom right & bottom left. the ones on my tv were easily taken off with my hands. after you do that, go to the front of the tv. take off the bottom plastic piece below the tv screen. it's stuck on with a big magnet. tug @ it.
