We have had our phones about a year. Very recently they started displaying the message "warning! check batteries!" The manual said that means the batteries are either not there, or installed wrong. So I take them out and put them back in again, and the phone may or may not work for a few minutes, then becomes useless again. The message doesn't say anything about the batteries needing recharging, just to check them. The phones doesn't die quite as quickly in the base set as in the satellite base, but neither is dependable. Looking for replacement batteries on the vtech website, they don't even show replacement batteries for a 5850.
Buy a new battery from ebay. just type in the search box, 80-5808-00-00 (the battery number) You should be able to get a replacement for around $6 incl shipping. This worked for me anyway. (Same symptoms you described)

If your phone worked fine and this problem just started happening and seems to be getting worse, I would change the battery, even if the charge light indicates that the battery is charging and you "think" the battery is charged.
Most of these weird problems that start occurring in a phone that always worked fine are caused by the battery goinf dead. You can buy a replacement battery on ebay for like $6-$7 with shipping for most models of cordless phones. I sort of rehab cordless phones that I get at yard sales and at goodwills and sell them on ebay. Out of 50 or 60 so far, I have never found a broken one. I have found, however, plenty of phones that initially display all sorts of weird symptoms which are ALWAYS -- and i mean always -- fixed by a new battery. Good luck.
That message is displayed when the 2 aa batteries go dead on a partner ACS. The batteries are located on the "main" card on the bottom front below the plugs for the phones. It has a black slide bar that you push up to get the battery module out.Make sure you put the batteries in as shown on the module. Replace when finished. hope that helps.
Panasonic KX-TG1050N Cordless Phone. Base handset (No. 1, KX-TGA100N) does not work, no keypad response or dial tone. Green indicator message light ON (should only work with the TG1000N base unit) all the time till battery runs down. Display shows message ?C533?. Can still send and receive calls on extension phones 2 and 3.
Although your batteries are exhibiting a charge memory effect a little early, it doesn't surprise me too much after the phones are in use for two years.
You need to replace the batteries in your cordless phones. These you can find at any Radio Shack. Once yo have installed the new batteries you want to let both batteries go dead from use, keep them off the charger stand for this break in period. If you can do this your phones batteries will last longer.
I had this problem too. I popped the battery out, waited 1 minute then put it back in. Unfortunately this clears the memory of all recent calls, etc. but it immediately started working again. So far its only happened once...
