If all you are wanting to do is read or print the email attachments, and they have been written using Word 2003 or Excel 2003, you can go to Microsoft.com and download Word Viewer 2003 and Excel Viewer 2003. These two viewers will allow you to read or print either Word or Excel documents as long as the original composer used Word 2003 or Excel 2003, or some earlier version such as 2000 or XP. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft has not released a viewer for any of its 2007 programs yet.

However, if you are wanting to compose new documents, or edit the attached documents, you will need to have a copy of the program in question.

There is also one other possibility. You can go to openoffice.org and download a free copy of Open Office. I am not sure if the Open Office Suite is 100% compatible with the Microsoft Office products, but it should be close enough to get you by.

One other thing, if you are receiving .pdf documents, you can go to Adobe.com and download the latest version of Adobe Reader. This is also a free download and will allow you to open, view and print the .pdf documents but, again, in order to edit them you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat (not free) or some other compatible program such as Open Office (again there may be some slight compatibility issues to deal with).

Hope that helps - Graye

I am using Microsoft Vista. It works with Microsoft Works. But most of the mail attachments recived cannot be opened since it tells the system is not attached with the required software. Now I thik if I...

You can have both installed at the same time. This will take up a lot more space on your hard drive. Additionally, both programs will want to be the default for many things.

What e-mail program are you using? Can you save the attachment to disc and then open it separately. Some programs are set to not open attachments at all to prevent malware. Check these settings. (It's been awhile since I used Windows Mail. Usually it will be under Attachments in Tools or Options.)

What attachements are causing the problems? Works should read any Office attachment (Excel, Word, etc.) You may need a patch for Office 2010 documents (or the Microsoft Viewer for each program - free from microsoft.com). There are also free alternatives to Office (such as OpenOffice which will read most Office files - 2007 and back). Please note if the problem is related to Outlook (the e-mail program in the higher end versions of Office), the program is not in the Home and Student edition.

However, if the attachments are PDFs, make sure you have Adobe Reader set as the default to read those. In Windows 7, you can set the default Program to open a file in the Control Panel. Start > Control Panel > Programs > Set your default programs.

I hope this helps.

Cannot open attachments in yahoo mail

Hi,

Part of the problem might be that you don't have the correct program installed on your computer to open the attachments. Here is an example. If you do a document in Microsoft Word and then send it to me. If I don't have Microsoft Word installed on my computer then I won't be able to open it. Check with the people that send you the attachments and ask them what program they use to open or produce them. If you don't have them installed then that is your problem. Best wishes....hope this helps.

I need to get pictures sent to my email transferred to my desk top so i can access them individually on desk top i have windows xp program I need to do this so I can put pictures on craigslist thanks.

When you open your e-mail, the pictures are either embeded in the body of the e-mail or as an attachment. Either way, you should be able to right click the picture or the attachment and select save as. Then navigate to your desktop and click save. You can also open the attachment and save the file from within the program that it opens in.

<grin> Had this problem years ago and it really frustrated me.
- Open the Control Panel - Open Folder Options Click on File Associations tab
Go down to the .doc extension listing and . . . change it to Word or WordPad if you don't have MS Word installed.
