Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Display skips, blinks and pauses

I have an HDTV with 2 HDMI ports.  I had my ps3 connected through the first HDMI port and it would skip, the screen would go blank in the middle of the game.  Also, during any sort of change in phases (i.e. ejecting a disc manually or starting/stopping a program in game) the screen will go blank and be accompanied by a loud popping of my speakers, like when you pull your finger across the needle of a record player.  I can't recreate any of these problems and they aren't regular.  I can't pin down what the problem is.  I changed to the second hdmi input and the problem stopped for a while, but it seems to be starting up again.  Is it a bad signal from the PS3?  Is it a bad HDMI cable?  Is it the HDMI ports?  Please help!

Be more specific when you say "wrong".

  • horne_andrew Jan 04, 2009

My HDMI cable is not loose.  I don't know what you mean by my display settings are wrong.  This seems to be happening more and more at the start of games or movies when the PS3 is deciding which viewing mode (720p or 1080i) is best.  My ps3 is set to automatically set the display and this happens even when there is no change in display resolution (from 1080i ps3 display to playing a movie in 1080i).  The display settings on my TV aren't wrong, they are mandated by the input coming through the HDMI.  Please help.

Note: How to reset video output settings
If you are attempting to change to an HDMI cable from a different video cable or if the video output settings do not match those required for the display in use, the screen may stay black. If the screen stays black for more than 30 seconds, you may need to reset the video output settings of the PS3.

To reset video output settings:

  1. Turn the PS3 system off by holding the Power button on the front of the console till you see the power light turn red.
  2. Then hold the power button on the front of the console for at least five seconds until you hear a second beep to turn the system on again. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.

Minimum Requirements

  • PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system
  • SIXAXISTM wireless controller (and USB cable)
  • AC power cord
  • HDMI cable1 (sold separately)
  • TV or display monitor with HDMI port and capable of displaying picture in HD resolution
  • Updated system software installed on your PS3
Visit PS3 System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.
  • TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port
You need to know the TV "Input" or "Video" channel for the HDMI port on your TV. For instance, if your TV has multiple "Input" or "Video" channels, (i.e., "Input 1", "Input 2", "Input 3", etc.), you will need to toggle through each "Input" channel on your TV until you find the correct channel that displays the HDMI picture. This is important to remember, especially if you do not see the HDMI picture after you connect the cable and configure the PS3 settings. Please refer to the TV instruction manual for more information.

How do I hook up Xbox 360 to the HDTV

Step 1:

Connect the audio/video input of the component cable into the "A/V" port located on the back of the xbox 360

Step 2:

Match the red, blue and green cables on the other end of the component cable to the corresponding component ports on your HDTV. If your HDTV has more than one set of component inputs, make note of which one you use.

Step 3:

Slide the switch on the component cable to "HDTV."

Step 4:

Turn on your HDTV. Set the video mode to the component port that will be used. HDTVs with multiple component ports will usually be labeled "Component 1," "Component 2" and so on

Step 5:

Turn on the Xbox 360. Go to "My Xbox." Select "System Settings" then "Console Settings" then "Display" and then "HDTV Settings." Choose the display setting (720p, 1080i and 1080p) that is best compatible with your HDTV. If you're not sure, try them all until you find the one that looks best.

Step 6:

Disconnect any previously connected A/V or component cables.

Step 7:

Connect the HDMI AV cable connector to the "HDMI AV" port on the Xbox 360.

Step 8:

Connect the other end to an available HDMI port on your HDTV. If your HDTV has more than one HDMI input, make note of which one you use.

Step 9:

Turn on your HDTV. Set the video mode to the HDMI port that will be used. HDTVs with multiple component ports will usually label them "HDMI 1," "HDMI 2" and so on.

Step 10:

Turn on the Xbox 360. Go to "My Xbox." Select "System Settings" then "Console Settings" then "Display" and then "HDTV Settings." Pick the display setting (720p, 1080i and 1080p) that looks best on your HDTV.

How to connect blu ray player hdmi to my laptop

1) Look at your laptop computer to see if you have an HDMI cable port. This port is roughly half an inch wide and provides both the HD audio and video signal. If you don't, you are going to use a DVI port on the laptop. This is the same port you use to connect monitors to your computer.

2) Plug the DVI-to-HDMI adapter into the DVI port on the laptop with the Blu-ray player. If you have an HDMI port on your laptop, you can skip this step.

3) Connect an HDMI cable to the HDMI end of the adapter. If you have an HDMI port, plug the cable directly into the HDMI port.

4) Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the HD television. Power on your television, press the "Input" button and select "HDMI." You can now see the contents from your Blu-ray player on the TV.

I have sharp 37 inch LC-37D44U MY PS3 is not working with it it green lights keep blinking power light and OPC. BUT THE HDMi ports work beacause i checked it with other devices. so i dont know why its not...

Does this happen when you input certain signals to the HDMI2_bing.gif ports? Or all signals (e.g. 1080i, 720p, 1080p, etc.)? And which ports are affected - side HDMI, rear component, etc.?

I had this issue and Sharp sent out a local repair tech to install a new main circuit board, then two weeks later, a new side board (where the side inputs connect into the system)... their first visit allowed my TV to accept signals in the rear HDMI ports (all signals worked well), but then I couldn't get a signal processed via the side HDMI port. At first, just 1080p would not display (caused the OPC/power green light blinking), and after a few days, any signal hitting that port would cause the error lights to come on. But as I said, eventually, a new side board resolved that issue.

Getting the TV to play through the HDMI cord

First, you need to set the playstation to display on HDMI out.

Plug the HDMI cable into the TV and into the PS3.

Use the PS3 to setup the video settings to 720p which every HDTV can display. Then switch the TV-out to HDMI and it should display.

Also consult your televisions manual to set it up for HDMI input as well. Make sure that the TV allows sound through the HDMI port as some older HDTV's didn't have that ability.

If you still have a problem; please let me know! I hope it helps you out
