Question about HP Photosmart C5180 All-In-One InkJet Printer
When I try to scan a document, I get 'refer to device documentation' error on the printer

Solution one: Make sure that the Digital Imaging Monitor
The Digital Imaging Monitor must be running in order for the Scan To function to work. If it is running, the DIM icon ( ) is present in the notification area. The notification area is located in the lower-right corner of the computer by the clock.
