External Hard Drive malfunction

Hi there,
My wife has bought a Verbatim 1 Terabyte External HardDrive, and a little pop up window comes up saying ''One of the USBdevices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows doesnot recognized it.'' It was working fine and now not at all. Ithasn't been dropped or anything either. It is not powered by USB butmust be plugged in to work. I just can't figure out what the heck hashappened, or how to fix it without taking it in to a professional andpay squillions of dollars to get it fixed, if it can be fixed. Can youplease help? Thank you in advance for your time, it's very muchappreciated, It's a Verbatim 1 Terabyte External Hard Drive Model#47512.

I didn't even think of that, we both run Vista on our laptops, and XP home on our desktop - and we have tried plugging it into all USB ports as well. Think I'll have a look at that link too, thank you for that.

Used the drive once to back up files of one PC and one desktop - after one day - the power comes on, the unit makes a few strange noises and the drive is not recognized by any PC - even a third one brought in to just check on things. Verbatim's website is not at all helpful.

Hey Pete,

Why don't you try plugging it into another USB port?
Although, your best shot is going to verbatim.com/support/support-article.cfm?support_id=7B8B6B2C-1422-1392-A8B4CF52416BBF75&supportType=Article and follow that troubleshooting until the problem gets resolved.

Something that could really help us to help you, is if you are running windows XP or windows Vista.

I had the same problem.

It would seem that, as the error does not state that the disc is faulty, that the problem is with communication between the USB port and the hard drive. I came to the conclusion that the hard disc can be removed from the casing, and with a SATA docking station similar to the one shown here, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200537616453&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT, I am now writing to my hard drive via my docking station as I put this post together. It works perfectly. Another way around the problem would be to buy a new hard disc enclosure.

HOW MANY AMP NEED A POWER SUPLY FOR A VERBATIM SNS2TB ?

Hi Jorge
Internally a standard 3.5" Hard Drive uses two voltages
about .7A on the 5v Line
and .55A on the 12v line.
So an External AC Plug Pack supplying 12v @ 1.5 to 2Amp should be adequate.
Be careful to match the polarity as marked on the back of your drive and use the correct thickness of the centre pin. There are 2-3 different sizes of this connector available at electronics component suppliers in case you make your own supply up.
Good Luck
Trevor

Windows 7 doesnt recognize external hard drive

In my opinion either the dive is bad or the power supply is bad. A bad power supply can be fixed by getting a new case, $20 on Amazon, Ebay, etc. Data on a bad drive may be recovered by using specialized software. I used DiskInternals(.com) "UnEraser" successfully to recover data from a disk that would not mount.

Disconnect the MyBook.
Connect it *ONLY* when you are prompted to connect it.

> just bought

Take it back to where you bought it -- it could be "defective" -- and get a replacement, under warranty.

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

Lacie 1tb external hard drive into ps3 is not regconised

I have the same issue, however with my verbatim 500g its ok. i believe it is because the lacie is a desktop external and therefore is compatable with windows xp and 7 alone.
Verbatim is a "portable" external hard drive which makes it compatible with several different systems. I would suggest returning it, I just formatted my old verbatim harddrive and set up mediaasharing. Through my router. You can actually route the lacie harddrive by going to my computer and right click the icon. Next go to share with; advanced settings and allow all. Then when you turn your ps3 on search for media servers... I would suggest to google media server for ps3 to get it all seet up. GOOD LUCK
