DNS timeout error

I can not open yahoo home page or mail or messenger. i get dns timeout error. please help me to fix it. i need to check my emails

    I also suddenly have the same problem. At university I was able to access my account, but not at home. I've tried disabling my firewall (through Norton), and have tried accessing Yahoo through IE & Firefox. Anyw suggestions

    I am also having the DNS timeout error problem. I can access my yahoo mail at work but not on my laptop at home. I have Internet Explorer 6 and Windows XP.

     purchased athe new sony mylo-com2.Everytime I try to sign in to yahoo messenger it gives a timeout error.What do I do?I have tried everything.Redownloading?doesn;t work.HELP.

Fundenmentals guys.

Type into the browser http://217.146.186.51

This happens to be yahoo ip address. If this works then you have issues with the DNS settings on your network. If not see item 2 below;

Check that via start/Run/cmd - this should take you to a black and white text screen.

type 'ipconfig /all' this will show the connections.
If you have more than one. It's wise to only have one currently connected.

Either Wireless or Ethernet. At the bottom of the list of numbers.

You should see 'DNS Servers' entry. Type 'PING ' then the IP address.

Normally 192.168.0.1 (Might be different so check!), If you get no reply then that's your answer.

Try changing the DNS settings via 'My Network Places/ View My Networks/' Highlight the Connected Network.

Then right click, select Propertise.

Then under 'This connection uses the following items' scroll down to the TCP/IP.

Select it. Then select 'Propertise' At the bottom. Obtain DNS server address.

Select Use the following. Then type the following Public DNS IP address into the first box. 66.93.87.2 and then the one that you found using IPCONFIG /ALL in the second.

This then will lookup the IP address for the URL's that you type into the browser. By asking the Public DNS server first. This is then unrelated to the way that you talk to the internet. (DSL/Corp etc)

Select 'OK' until you return to the Desktop. Open the browser and it should work. But the window system may need a restart for the settings to take effect. Depends on what OS is running.

Item 2:

If it does not then you have issues with you actual internet connection.

start/Run/cmd - this should take you to a black and white text screen.

Type 'tracert 217.146.186.51' then hit enter.

This will then show the route that the system is taking to get to the website.

If it shows the yahoo.com at the end your fine. Otherwise, it will pinpoint where the system is stopping.

If, it works then the issue is with the browser. Here is the Firefox address to download a better browser! - type into browser http://66.93.87.2 download!

Now, for those sorry chaps that stop, without reaching the end!!

Type in 'ipconfig /all' again. Check that the IP address you recieved is not 169.254.x.x as this indicates that the device that provides the IP number is having a bad day. Reset this device if you are able. Turn it off and Wait! Best option is make a cup of tea. Then turn the device back on. Let it have at least the time it takes you to drink your just made HOT tea before you retype 'IPCONFIG /ALL' We know you end users!

If you are using a wireless connection that states it's connected. Check that you have put WEP or Security key in correctly. It made state that you are connected. But running the IPCONFIG at command prompt normally says different.

Follow these guidelines to fix this problem:

  • Update Adobe Flash Player
  • Reduce the Number of Running Internet Applications

This is a DNS problem. Simply turn off your router and then back on. If that doesn't fix it, then try turning your firewall off or grant access to port 53 in the firewall.

If you still have the problem after you have done all this, open CMD and type in this command:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Then press Enter and when finished type this one in, Enter and when finished restart your PC:
netsh int ip reset reset.log

My wireless shows it's online but none of the browsers work...I get error 101... Tried to do what I could with above answers to no avail... Any more suggestions?


Your wireless is probably showing you "connected" which does not mean that it is connected to the Interenet.
It only means that it has connected to your wireless access point (WAP) which is a good start.

You did not post enough information at this point for me to be sure but I will take a couple educatated guesses.

Your WAP is not connected to the Internet. Read the manual and figure out how to connect it.
Your computer is not getting a valid DNS server which is what translates the host names to IP addresses so the page can be opened. In short, it cannot fingure out what the address is for www.yahoo.com. On home networks the DNS server is usually the IP address of your router/modem. You can check this by opening a command prompt and typing the command "ipconfig /all". It will show you all of your settings.

At this point, if you feel I have gone "over your head" I highly recommend that arrange for a professional to troubleshoot your problem on the phone or at your home. You are not going to learn a semester of networking 101 by posting questions in a forum.

Turning off and disable DNS pre-fetching may actually solve and fix many web page not loading issue in Google Chrome. Here's how to disable and turn of DNS prefetching in Google Chrome.
  1. In Google Chrome, click on Tools menu (a little wrench icon), then go to Options.
  2. Click on the Under the Hood tab.
  3. Under "Privacy" section, untick the check box for Use DNS pre-fetching to improve page load performance.

it could be a dns problem. you can ask dns server from your ISP.

you may use the universal dns server:
dns server1: 4.2.2.2
dns server2:4.2.2.3

it is best to ask the dns server from ISP.

or you may try this website, you dont need to download yahoo messenger software.

PS3 DNS error


you need to manually enter the internet settings on your ps3. to find out what they are, go to your routers home page and look at the ip tcp and dns server settings (dont touch them; write them down)
