Find ec_flash pin on dell d420 motherbord
short the pin and it ok no grey screen

Ok these guys seem to claim that they can unlock it http://www.spunlock.com/_dell.htm
But i have ru into this sort of trouble with DELL bios password in the past and the password is stored in a security chip on the motherboard and the only way i have been able to clear it was to order a new chip and carefully cutt the old chip out and solder a new one in its place.. (not a fun project that i would ever want to repeat. In fact i was amazed when the computer turned on and worked when i was finished...lol)
But t hat was also on a slightly older inspiron laptop so maybe with newer laptop like the one you have it is possible for the place listed above to unlock it for you.
I am currious as to the solution you find so please update this post here with the working solution that you find
