The receiving data process never completes and then gives the error message "the data transfer failed please try again"

  • liha60 Dec 04, 2008

Same problem here - after one month of working fine. I have tried the fixes suggested by Omron but no luck!

  • Anonymous Dec 09, 2008

The unit I purchased as a gift for my mother has the same problem... in fact, in addition to the original unit failing we have now gone back to Omron 3 times, after doing all of the recommended diagnostics, and received a new unit. After about 3 months with her 4th unit working fine, it has now failing in the middle of download. My wife and I have had units for years and have never had a problem... we have tried my mom's failing unit our our computers and it won't work... and we take our "good" unit to my mother's PC and they work just fine.

I have had mine for 16 months, it will no longer transfer data. I hate to lose all my stesp info! any ideas?

Data Transfer failure, pedometer is 16 months old and has work great until today!

  • janet_naasta Dec 29, 2008

I just saw this suggestion and what I did was installed the software on our family's second PC (never been installed on this one before). Then I tried Data Transfer again. It failed with the same error.

Thanks for trying, but this did not work for me.

  • klbrejska Jan 03, 2009

I tried to download my current data today and have encountered the transfer failure too. I created a CSV file of the existing data. I then uninstalled the older version of the software on my machine and downloaded the newest version from the Omron website in hopes that would resolve the issue. It didn't. Any additional suggestions will be appreciated.

  • sjoerdieee Jan 21, 2009

Same problem. Just installed the software (older version from CD-rom and later the update from the website). No transfer possible. Constantly fails.

  • Anonymous Feb 07, 2009

Same issue-unit downloaded fine for 5 months. all of sudden get error in middle of upload (38%) it quits. Omron was not helpful, nor sympathetic. Tried on 3 different computers, with software loaded from internet, from disc. Clearly the issue is with the Omron unit.

  • GP323 Feb 08, 2009

Same problem here. 1st unit started acting weird (resetting all the time) after about a year. Omron sent me a new unit but now after just a few months this 2nd unit refuses to get past 75 - 80% trying to download. Restored software on my PC that didn't work. Screwed up and lost ALL my last year's worth of walking data! Arghhhh!!!! Used the reset button on the unit but that didn't help. It resets the time, but it doesn't lose the stride length and weight so clearly it doesn't do a COMPLETE reset of the unit. Installed the sofware brand new on my laptop, BUT same problem, gets to about 80% during download and fails. Any solutions out there yet?

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2009

My unit failed today, but found a comment on Amazon that the guy said works. The problem is internal to the pedometer unit. He reset at 11:59PM until he cleared the data error. Since it has 42 days of memory it can take a while. Read the comments from Nathan.

  • me45 Feb 22, 2009

Same problem. Device works so well otherwise...but this really sucks. What's the point of having the software if you can't get the thing to download or reset!

  • janet_naasta Mar 10, 2009

Yes indeedy........42 days after I had the problem it finally went away. I too surmised that it was a corrupt 'day'. So, don't give up and if you don't want to spend the time clicking 11:59 to clear it off, just wait the 42 days.

  • Watsoka Apr 28, 2009

Same as above. Mine worked perfectly for 8 months now the data won't transfer. I had this problem with my first one right off the bat and exchanged it for the one I have now. I thought I just got a lemon the first time but now I don't think so. Extremely frustrating and of course I don't have my receipt so doubt I'll ever see my money or my data again.

  • cielo26 May 22, 2009

I had the same problem with my pedometer. It has been working correctly until a few days ago when I was going to transfer the data it wouldn't do it. I emailed Omron and received a reply next day. They said that generally, when that error message occurs, it is an anti-virus,spyware or other utility program issue. I disabled the programs temporarily and uninstalled the Omron program and installed from the Omron page and nothing worked. I called the number they gave me and all they said was to send the pedometer for repairs along with a money order for $5.00, since I still have warranty on it. I did what Nathan suggested and it is working again. Thank you very much Nathan.

Should be I had the same problem!! Thanks, knew it had a bad data point, Ormon tech support great and was ready to pack it up and send it back to them when I found this thread!
Thank you, reinstalling software, changing battery, resetting all stride/goal etc, nothing worked until I did the 11:59 trick about 6 times.

Data Transfer Failed - drop-down-icon-small-empty-arrow._v13355991_.gifNathan Price says: I had the same download problem, and after fiddling with the pedometer for a couple of hours I figured out the basis of the problem and was able to fix it. Being a software engineer, I figured that since it copies each day's data to memory once the clock clicks over to 12 AM, there must have been one day somewhere that had corrupt data. The download would always reach a certain percentage and then fail and as more days were saved, the percentage went up slowly. Unfortunately, Omron does not provide a mechanism to clear the internal memory inside the pedometer, which it really needs to do. The reset button on the back does NOT do this. The software on the computer has nothing to do with this problem. It is completely internal to the pedometer itself. In any case, to fix the problem, I just started setting the clock to 11:59 PM, waiting a minute and doing this quite a few times until the corrupt day's data was pushed out of memory. It holds 42 days, so eventually the data will be erased. Well, it fixed the problem! Of course, when the download finally worked the data was all screwed up. Then I just exported all the data to CSV, opened it up in a text editor and fixed the screwed up days, then re-imported the CSV file using the software.

Unfortunately, this whole process takes patience and a good knowledge of computers and software. Shame on Omron for not making it more user-friendly and providing a button to clear the memory or enabling the software to skip over and delete corrupt data. But hey, that's what you get for $30, software developed in India.

Thank you, Nathan, that worked ! I was so unhappy facing this problem after almost 3 year's daily use, and after getting no response from Omron to my e-mails.

This worked for me, mine was failing at 95%, I set it to 11:59pm 2 times waited until 12 and retried, then it worked! Good fix!

Thanks to fixya and Nathan for the solution - resetting the clock to 11:59 a few times worked! I had hooked up the unit earlier today and realized there wasn't any data for the past 30 days! :(
This did the trick. Thank you!!!

This solution worked for me also. Thanks Nathan for the idea. As you said process pushed out data until it got rid of the corrupt day. This causes the most recent days to appear to have no activity. I suspect the way the date is determined has moved the most current data back several days. I will not be trying to figure out how many days need to be move to correct the dates in the CSV file.

It means that Data for 30 days is available in the Pedometer memory and can be downloaded. If you do not download, the symbol "Bi" continues to flash, consuming the battery.

Deleting the memory of Omron HJ-720ITFFP is very tricky. Even I tried to do it last week and was unsuccessful.

Have a flashing bi in right corner

This flashing Bi indicates full storage. It's time for you to download your data to the PC. It will keep working for you but will not be able to store any more data.

Doesn't download recent data. It says its downloading but it is not there when download completed. 11/06 is last data in cpu. 11-06--11/29 is in bp cuff

Hi,

I had seen the same download problem many times, and after fiddling with the pedometer for a couple of hours I figured out the basis of the problem and was able to fix it.

Being a software engineer, I figured that since it copies each day's data to memory once the clock clicks over to 12 AM, there must have been one day somewhere that had corrupt data.

The download would always reach a certain percentage and then fail and as more days were saved, the percentage went up slowly. Unfortunately,

Omron does not provide a mechanism to clear the internal memory inside the pedometer, which it really needs to do.

Shame on Omron for not making it more user-friendly and providing a button to clear the memory or enabling the software to skip over and delete corrupt data.

Following this step should solve your issue...

A flashing display Icon

Paraphrasing the manual - That flashing icon is the "Full Memory Indicator." It flashes when 35 days' worth of data, including current day, are stored in the memory and has not been downloaded.
