Operating System Not Found

I have a Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-K15). When I turn it on, I get an error that says "SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK6021GAS-(PM) Warning: Immediately back-up your data an replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue." When I press F1, it says "Operating System Not Found" Unfortunately my CD drive hasn't been working for a while, so I do not have access to any of the recovery disks. I tried to use the F10 function, but nothing happens, I also cannot access the menu by pressing F8. The only thing that I can access (that I know of) is the BIOS menu (F2). I would love to try to recover the data on my computer if possible, but if not, is there at least some way that I can do a system recovery? Please help!!! Thanks!

Ok, so I looked through the BIOS and I was unable to find anything with SMART that I could disable. However, by trying different options in the BIOS I am able to get a different error message...I just have no idea what it means! By going through the Advanced Menu and into the Parallel Port Menu, I can disable the parallel port. Then when I restart I get the same SMART failure error, but after I press F1 I get a new message. "For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.12 (010817). PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable, PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082). Does anyone know what this means, or if its better or worse? Again, the main problem is I DO NOT have access to my CD drive on the laptop. I do however have an external CD drive which I attempted to install, however at the end of the installation, when I had to restart, this happened. So I don't know if it is properly installed on the computer. Is there any way to access this external hardrive to run the recovery disks. I tried to attach it through the USB ports, but to no success. I don't have too much experience with these kind of computer problems....Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks again!

Your Hard Disk Drive is facing SMART status check failure. It is very dificult to try anything because your CD drive also not working. Enter the bios and see if there is any option for you to disable SMART. That way the error messege will disappear, but you need a good cd drive to install a OS

  • Anonymous Nov 25, 2008

The error about media test failure is nothing to worry about. Also you don't need to disable the parallel port. Since you have a external cd drive, connect it to your laptop, enter bios and look for the option where you can chage to Boot Device order. If you can find one then set the first boot device to USB CDROM If this option is available. Then insert a XP installation disc in your cd and you will be able to boot from cdrom. If cannot find USB CDROM option then tell all the available option there

SOURCE: smart failure predicted on hard disk toshiba mk4025gas ( pm )

This means your hard drive is bad or about to go bad and needs to be replaced. If you can still access the drive, immediately back up anything important to you. You will then need to replace the hard drive. Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution with a fixya rating, even if the news isn't what you wanted to hear. Thanks! :c)

Operating system not found

It seems that either the OS is corrupt on your system or the Hard Disk Drive is not getting detected.

To confirm if the hard disk drive is detected you need to go into the BIOS and check if it shows the Drive present.

Just check if the Drive is present in BIOS. If you find the Drive in BIOS You can try to re-install the Operating system using the OS disk.

So, my laptop - (Sony Vaio VGN-CR220E) has crashed twice before... I just found the Repair Disks, but I'm not quite sure what to do. I put the first disk in, and it loads up to a screen SMART Failure...

Have you ever heard of TDL4 malware? It actually writes a new partition with oddball parameters such that most antivirus and anti-malware products cannot find the infection. But often the new partition overlaps previous partitions, making the internal "not-so-SMART" routines suspect that the hard drive is failing. It usually is not true! But there are only a scant few utilities that even detect TDL4, or any of it's variations. Good Luck!

Hard Disk Problem

That failure is predicted by the SMART reporting system. Its a status chip on the drive that reports to apps that can read the smart data from the hard drive. Its not always accurate but it usually is.

Time backup your data on that drive ASAP and then buy a new drive.

Sony Vaio PCG-TR3A, Blue Screen states cannot find operating syst

There should be a factory image on the HD when you try restarting it. Hold down the F8 key or F10 key while its rebooting this should start the recovery process you shouldnt need a windows disk.

OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND....NO ACCESS TO CD DRIVE

Connect your external CDROM to the laptop. I think it is a USB CDROM. Enter your bios setup. In the boot device section, try to find any option which says First Boot Device -> USB CDROM. If you can set this things then the computer will be able to boot from your external cdrom.

Operating System Not Found, Can't Use CD Drive

I'm afraid you have a hard disk problem, it has probably failed.
If you have entered your BIOS and the hard disk has been set to auto (detect) and when you boot up and you press F1 to continue and get a message "Operating System not found" then you have most likely a dead hard drive.
There is a slight chance you may be able to recover data from this hard drive. (A lot of users make a mistake of not backing up their data and eventually they learn from this mistake).

To try to recover your data, you need a USB adapter that you can attach it to your faulty drive and then you need to connect this USB device to a working computer. When you connect it to the computer, anf if you are lucky you will be able to see your hard as an external hard disc, if not then you are out of luck. There are companies that can recover data from dead hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

It sounds like you also have a faulty CD drive, without a working CD drive you will not be able to install Windows on a new hard drive in your Toshiba. Looks like you also need to by a new CD drive. This CD drive or your external CD drive has to be able to boot up as a first device to install the Windows CD.

Error message at startup !!

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology.

If you want lots of details on what it is, and does, take a look at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fix this since it's a hardware problem on the hard drive. The drive may last for years or it may die tomorrow. At a minimum I would back up everything you care about on a regular basis.

If you found this information helpful I would appreciate it if you would rate this solution. I hate to beg, but over half of the solutions I've posted have no feedback. I'm not paid for this I'm just trying to help.
