You do not need to replace it. If it does not read the same when you reverse it, on one end there are a nut over and under the tube and plug assembly. Adjust those up or down until it reads the same.

Hi, Easy fix. Put the level on any surface, note where the bubble is, Then turn the level 180 degrees and check the bubble again. If it's in the same place, Your level is perfect. If it's not, unfortunately you will need to replace it.

If this doesn’t work for you, please write back.

Thanks

Try the starrett web site. You can chat with them there about it. The adjustments are fair easy to do.

I just aquired a Starrett 721 digital caliper that wouldn't turn on. Took cover off and batteries were in reversed polarity. New batteries didn't help. Is the display fried?

More than likely. But to make sure: check that new battery is good (voltmeter). Check with ohmmeter across the battery contacts - should read few hundred ohms to few kiloohms. If OK, reinseret battery. Push ON button. Push reset button. If go, congrats. If not, get another caliper.

My model 449 starrett depth mic turns hard, how can I fix this?

Are you aware of the lock nut that keeps the barrel from turning? There is a knurled ring next to the base that rotates to lock and unlock the barrel with a clamping action. Check that this is not causing the problem. Turn to left to unclamp.

Hi. I just received a Starrett 98Z12 machinist

Sit level on near level surface. Observe bubble position. Turn level end for end. Does bubble sit at same position? If not adjust screw untill they match. Test, adjust and so on.

How do you replace the bubble in a starrett 98 Level

Contact me at Starrett and I can email you the instructions on how to change the vial only if you want. The other option is to purchase a new tube and plug assembly (the silver tube with the vial). That is much easier to do. After, you can always send the old one in for repair. Third option is to send out the tube and plug assembly to be repaired.
Most people will change the vial only the first time, after that they go with option 2 or 3.

My email is pnault@starrett.com

Micrometers out of calibration

Micrometers must be calibrated at 4 spots around the barrel and at zero and full scale to be truly accurate. You will have to send it to a calibration lab or back to Starrett for a full calibration because they will check it with gauge blocks of known length and verify the spindle and anvil surface flatness.

If you are only concerned with the zero and not as much about the full accuracy of the tool, then you can reset the zero yourself. With the mic fully closed (spindle and anvil touching), turn the barrel with the funky, half circle shaped wrench that came with the mic in the box. There is a little hole in the barrel where the nub on the wrench will fit then you just turn it until it reads zero. Good luck.

Use a second measuring tool and compare the results, or you can measure a known size or length (floor tiles for example)and check the reading you get.
