Question about Sewing Machines

Machine will not sew forward without backstitching

This old janome sewing machine( my guess its a early 80's model) has two dials on the front, what apears to be the stich size regulator and a pattern selector dial. It also dosnt apear to have a drop feed buttton anywhere. I tried to select a stitch to stop edges fraying after sewing beautifully and now the machine will only sew forward with a backstitch action ie; three foward two back etc. it dosnt seem to have a problem with any of the other fancy stiches

You have selected the Stretch Stich (SS) mode on the stitch length regulator, just turn the knob around until you have a number 1 - 5 and that should be it.
The model number will be the last digits on the metal compliance plate with voltage etc.....looks like:
V / 1234 / 123454321 / 2016

This then would be a Model 2016

Use the reverse button. That's what it is for. Sew forward and then push the button and sew in reverse.

If you have a darning foot, you can use it (drop the feed dogs) and then you manually move the fabric around while stitching.

I just purchased a New Home Treadle sewing machine. It came with all of the attachments, but no instruction manual. Probably need one. It is a Model A type 3, and the model # places it at 1909-10.

the sewing machine originally was a pine machine , later to become new home
I went google and typed in --new home treadle sewing machine 1909 model and wikipedia has the history of janome and new home
it shows elna as a subsidiary company and other details
a site janome -wikipedia, the free encyclopedia states when the pine sewing machine factory was produced and another site www.pinterest .com>pin
shows a photo of pine machines
Basically around that time the machines were similar in construction to very early singers so it may pay you to research early singers , pine , and other manufacturers around that period

Why does upper thread snap when backstitching?

May be an issue with the feed dogs, or possibly a burr on the hook. Lay a peice of scrap material under the foot as if you were going to sew, remove needle, then run machine in reverse to see if it feeds material backwards as it should

I have a CP 6500 Brother sewing machine. I'm getting an E5 code when trying to backstitch ONLY, sewing forward is fine. Any suggestions?

I have several machines but not a Brother. Have you tried typing in your Model number on the internet and asking the question there? Best wishes, Kate

Backstitch isn't working

First, ensure that you are pressing the reverse lever all the way in and holding it. A light touch won't work on this model.

There is a spring loaded cam in the feed system which can get gummed up when the lubricant gets old. It needs to be carefully taken apart, solvent cleaned, re-lubricated and reassembled. A knowledgeable repair person needs to perform this operation.

Viking 190 sewing machine stuck on backstitch

Found the problem (s) with Viking stuck on backstitch!!!

Two problems:

A: machine is "gummed-up" form old grease.
Solution: degrease machine with a high quality degreaser.. I used a spray electrical degreaser from an automotive store. Turn the machine up-side-down to preform this!
Then relubricate machine. Use a high quality sweing machine lubricant! Also lubricate the inner parts with a qigh quality "Sewing machine" oil.

B: Found that the return spring from foreward to backward was tired.
Soultion: Replace with slightly stronger spring from local hardware store.

If you need pictures, I took very detailed pictures of the reverse mechanism and "return to forward" spring.
