I have a Brother HL 4040Cn printer that has stopped working completely with the exception of the side exhaust fan running. This machine has printed low volume of work over it's 18 month period and I have read another post today describing the same problem!! Any ideas? Brother want a minimum of €150 to take a look at it.

Print unable 71

Print Unable 71 means Polygon Mirror Failure on the Brother HL-4040, MFC-9840 and MFC-9440.
Pretty safe to say it means the same thing on the MFC-8880.

The Polygon Mirror is part of the Laser Unit, and its rpm isn't within specs.
The Laser Unit must be replaced.

Drum End Soon

You will soon need to replace the drum. Its considered a consumable just like the toner cartridges. You can purchase the drum anywhere that sells brother pruducts.

I get error message Print Unable E1 for my brother hl4040cn. I don't know if it is a toner issue, because the toner cartridges have a little weight to them. I've read where there is a countdown setting...

E1 is called a program error, asking the printer to do something it thinks it can't. Could just be a print that uses a lot of memory, if you don't have the extra memory installed. The manual just says to power off and on again, but I would also look at what you are trying to print and try another job.

Print Unable 20

Bad news. The laser diode responsible for printing black has up and died. You need a new Laser Unit, part number LR1461001. Brother has released a "Service Update" about this one; the instructions for replacing the laser unit run to nine pages. If you're within the 1-year warranty, it won't cost you, but it won't be printing with it today.

Message E52 Service call what does that mean? (Brother HL 7050)

Probably a fatal error. Bad Laser Unit. Try unplugging the power cord for 10 seconds.

Printer error message

I got the same message on my Brother HL-4040CN color laser. As it turns out, there was a mega jam inside the printer. It was like 10+ pages, half of them crumpled up and one page was getting charred by the fuser. Once I found the jam (there was no jam indicated on the control panel), the printer worked fine.
