Question about Kenmore Dryers

Dryer won't keep running after start button is released

When we press the start button on our Kenmore dryer, it starts, but as soon as I let go of the start button, it immediately stops. It did this several times last week, now it does it everytime

I haven't been able to identify the where the spring loaded switch is. Do I need to take the back off the dryer to follow the wires, or do I need to take the drum out? The back is spot welded on, so I did not take it off. I took the top and front off, but I don't think I got to the correct spot.

    Thanks for your help.

On the motor is a spring loaded switch. When the motor spins fast enough, it moves and keeps the motor going. It could be stuck with lint. The spring loaded part moves parts inside where all the wires go. Look carefully, the wire locations should be marked. Don't open that part unless you're really good at putting little things back together. That part should be replaceable if it's gone bad. A little wd-40 can do a lot of wonders.

Yeah, you'll have to remove the drum to find the motor. Carefully release the belt, there should be an access door for that. Study how it goes, make a sketch if one is not on the back of the machine. The switch is part of the motor. Right behind where the wires go to the motor is this plastic part that moves up and down the motor shaft when the motor spins. You should be able to move it back and forth. Make sure all the wires are connected. The sliding switch pushes a small button on the back of the place where the wires go. If that area is full of lint, it could keep the switch from working.

You might be able to take the whole motor to a repair shop to be fixed. They might be in the yellow pages as motor rewinders. That way they could check out the whole motor.

The motor is under and behind the drum, which must come out. Photo or note how the belt goes, it's a bear to put back on.

Press start button and dryshuts off when start button is released

There is a switch assembly on the motor that activates when the motor is running. Centrifugal switch. It keeps it running when you release the switch. That is where to start. Eric

Kenmore 73954 : Only runs when the START button is continuously pressed

The start button starts the motor heater and energizes a relay that latches closed to keep the motor and heater running untill the timer switch or door switch cut the power to the relay and the relay opens.
The latching relay has failed or disconnected
if all the cables are attached to the relay
replace relay
not an expensive item, usualoly good for 10years
dryer circuits look like this, the start switch and relay are drawn just to the right of the motor, this diagram has no relevance to the physical position of the parts
