Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Garage door won't open

My garage door won’t open – it raises about 4 inches and stops. When I disengage it and try to lift it manually it is very heavy and won’t stay up
If I engage it while it is open (up) the bolt will catch and it will lower but won’t go back up again – only raises 4 inches and stops
Any ideas?

i tried that and still nothing - it just stops about 2 - 4 inches up - it doesn;t flash the chain will only go so far and i can't see anything that is stopping it

My garage door will remain open as long as I hold the remote or wall mounted door opener button down. As soon as I release the button, the door goes down. When I disengage the door from the chain, the chain can be driven to the open position in increments but when it gets near the top position, the chain reverses and goes to the closed position.

    Any ideas?

Can't open the door more than 4-6". Motor is working but seems to get blocked and goes back down. Manual won't budge it either. Can't see any blockage and chain seems OK.

Hmm, Well i had said this earlier, But though i was retarded... lol. It MAY be the Grease lining the track, I didnt think grease could freeze, but im sure anything is possible... If not that then I have no clue, Maybe call the installers and have them come look at it.

They are not light weight but there is no reason if the motor can raise it, then you cannot raise it by hand.

I have a craftsman 3/4 hp 315 mhz garage door opener model 13953990ds when ativating it to open it only moves 6 to 8" forward and back and stop. i have tried all steps in the manual can get it solved

If you've readjusted the opener, and it still isn't working, you need to have a trained door technician come out and adjust the tension on your springs. To determine this, pull the red release handle to disengage the opener from the door, and try to lift your door by hand. You should be able to move the door easily, and it should stay at the half open point without falling or rising. If the door is hard to move, excessively heavy to lift off the ground, or will not stay open, the door itself is the culprit. If the door is fine, the opener will need to be serviced.

You have either a broken door spring or the drive gear in the motor unit is bad. The drive gear is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and it will be obvious if it is bad.

Garage door only raises about two inches then stops.

Check the door springs and also remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. The door spring could be broken or the drive gear may be stripped.

The sensors only work when the door is closing.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Garage door went up about 6 inches and stopped. Door can be raised and lowered by hand without without disengageing it. Inside garage control only produces a clicking sound in motor area when pressing pad....

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. Most likely stripped. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at any good door service company. It comes with instructions but you must be a DIY'er.

On the back of the motor unit you will find the down force control. You may have to remove a light lens depending on your model. Increase this a 1/4 turn and try.
