When my fax machine does this, it prints out an error code. Most of the times it's "Poor transmission" or "Bad line". I can duplicate the problem by trying to fax out on my VoIP line instead of my regular land line.
Anymore today, it's usually easier to scan and email the document. I can e-fax the scan if I'm sending it to someone without an email address.
Make sure you know where the scanned document was saved to on your computer. Normally by default it is in My Documents -> My Pictures -> My scans. Then open your e-mail account, choose a new message and click on Attach. From there it'll prompt you to "browse" to the location of the document, once you point it in the right place, you basically hit OK and it'll upload it to the e-mail as an attachment. From there you can write your message and send it off.
You do not have the right driver downloaded. I actually just had that same problem. I could print but not scan through the CC3 panel. Follow that link and download the correct driver. http://www.brother-usa.com/downloads/
Make a stack of the documents you want to scan and load them in the automatic feeder: The page to scan facing upward, and the top of the page inside. Press the Scan button and start (color or black). If you choose the pdf format, you will have them in a single file.
