Is it on mute or something? Try making sure no one has messed around with the phone, My little girl was being silly with mine while i was cleaning my kitchen came back , Tried calling someone to make sure my phone worked and it wouldnt make a noise. Just try on the settings thingy that its not on mute or anything. SORRY IF ITS NOT ENOUGH :S

SOURCE: Remote Operation

This manual isn't for the exact model you mention, but it's pretty close: http://www.swbfreedomphone.com/ib/ibcord/fm2570w.pdf Page 15-16 describe how to check your messages remotely.

Do inexpensive corded phones have an internal battery? I just hooked up a phone that was stored away for a couple of years. It takes a few seconds to get a dial tone, but that time seems to be getting...

The 52860 is a phone line powered phone. There may be a memory backup battery or capacitor but it should not effect the operation of the phone drawing dial tone. Perhaps the hookswitch contacts are oxidized from storage and using it is cleaning them up a bit. If there is a battery, it should be accessible from either the bottom of the phone or, more typically, from under the directory card on the base.

Can,t call out ,just get beeping

place the handset on the base then try to dial the number. If it works then you will need to pair your handset with the cradle again before taking the handset away from the cradle to dial a number

Last resort unplug the power for five minutes and power on the base again.

Static on one handset

If this phone is connected to a phone line, move it to another. If the static goes away, then you know your phone line needs to be replaced.

Also, pop off the back cover and make sure the battery is plugged in securely. If the antenna is threaded, make sure it is snug.

Dial Tone - Number Dialed does not go through

The problem is possibly the keypad on the phone. Try another phone , preferrably a standard corded phone. If you still cannot break the dial tone, then the problem is with the telephone line (phone company)
