Del 320 optiplex orange lite blinks won't boot up

For the Optiplex 320, a flashing amber light with no sound indication can mean 3 things.

1) Your power supply has failed

2) Your motherboard failed, most likely from a bad capacitor.

3) The front panel board (where the power button is located) is faulty or not connected properly.

I've worked with 10's of 1000's of Dell Optiplex's over the past 8 years and the flashing amber light is well known as a tell-tail sign of one of those three failure. Always start your trouble shoot with a PSU tester, then inspect the motherboard for domed or split/leaking capacitors...then on to the front panel which would require another panel and ribbon from the same model.

Were do the jumpers go on a optiplex 330

There is the Password jumper (PSWD), and the CMOS jumper.

The CMOS battery is also termed the RTC battery.
Real Time Clock battery.
The CMOS jumper is labeled as RTCRST.

Real Time Clock ReSeT.

Jumper pin location is confusing if you go with Dell documentation.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/op330/en/ug/mtparts.htm#wp1607303

Dell Support documentation shows the RTCRST jumper pins near the Intel chipset, and PSWD jumper pins near the outside edge of the motherboard.

I'm also looking at the Dell Optiplex 330, Technical Guidebook, Inside the Optiplex 330,

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optix_330_techspecs.pdf

Location of RTCRST jumper pins, is near the left corner of the Intel chipset, instead of the right as shown above, and PSWD jumper pins are in the same location.

And several views of Optiplex 330 motherboard's on Ebay,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Optiplex-330-Motherboard-Socket-775-KP561-/140870576837?pt=Motherboards&hash=item20cc8a6ac5

(Nice to have that Zoom in feature on Ebay now)

Jumper pins close to the white SATA 2 connector, are the RTCRST jumper pins.

Jumper pins at the bottom side of the Intel chipset are the PSWD jumper pins.

Jumper cap stays on PSWD jumper pins.
No jumper cap on the RTCRST jumper pins.

Sir i have dell GX280 system 3.0 GHz optiplex. 1gb ddr2 ram with 80gb sata hard drive. Sir, my problem is this first i brought a system it runs fine but sometimes a day it hangs up. i return this...

Plz check your memory with memtest. It can be downloaded from http://www.memtest.org/download/4.10/memtest86+-4.10.iso.zip .
Unzip the downloaded file and burn the ISO file to a CD and boot your system from the CD. It will check the memory of your system and it will indicate any error replace the memory.
Also check your memory slot is clean .. you can clean your system memory slot using a anti-static brush (you can use a tooth brush if anti-static is not available) and IPA

Hi i have a dell dc550 motherboard and want to put a 1 TB hard drive on it can I ?? The computer is a optiplex 170L

Yes you can. If you are adding a second hard drive, don't forget that you will need to purchase an additional SATA cable.
If you are replacing your current hard drive, you shouldn't need any additional cables.
Download the hard disk drive's manufactures tools software to setup your SATA drive. Make sure the bios see's your 1TB drive listed. If it is going to run your operating system check the Boot section in your bios & make sure it is listed in the boot order.

Cheers!
Mike

My system hangs after about 5mins after booting

If it happens at 'random' times, and won't restart immediately, most likley it's overheating due to dust blocked heat sink / fan (or a bad fan)

If it always happens at the some point in the boot up before you get the password prompt .. most likley it's s/w

Hit F8 during power up.. select 'last known good'

If that fails, F8 and select 'Safe Mode'

If you get into Safe Mode, uninstall whatever you last installed that is causing the lock up (most likley some hardware driver or some virus/root kit you got via email)
