Garmin Nuvi 760T intermittently Freezes

My Garmin map sometimes freezes, the unit is only a few weeks old and was replaced for a unit that was doing the same. I have reset the unit and updated the software as advised by Garmin but it still happened afterwards. Is there something i could be doing wrong any advice would be appeciated.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Since most (if not all) of the possibilities have been forwarded, may I offer remote possibilities:

  • if used inside the vehicle and uses the cigarette lighter adapter:
  1. looses ground;
  2. faulty alternator's voltage regulator;
  3. loose/corroded contacts of the cigarette lighter adapter.
  • Others are:
  1. operated near high power RF emitting equipment such as 2way radio, even a microwave oven, communications tower, radio beacons;
  2. operated in highly magnetic areas such as a power station, wrecking places;
  3. operated in high static electricity area such as carpeted floors.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

You may have recieved another bad unit, it happens more often than you would think. try replacing the unit again. if it does it again then there may be some type of interference affecting it, i.e. cell phone, vehicle computer system...

From all indications it looks like its a device issue. I would suggest you wait for an updated firmware from Garmin then update to that. Report the problem with garmin and request a firmware that will fix that. The fact that 2 units experience the same problem means that its a permanent device issue that can only be solved by a firmware that fixes the specific problem which only Garmin can provide.

    There are no other options that can work as it looks like its a factory problem with the unit. You can request for a model exchange for a replacement with Garmin. thats an option that you can take.

You need to reset the nuvi, follow these steps:

Turn the nuvi off and on again. If this does not help, slide the POWER key to the left and hold for 8 seconds. Turn the nuvi back on. The nuvi should operate normally.

Posted on Nov 30, 2008

  • zabrina liang Nov 30, 2008

    PS, the nuvi received a new update in October of 2008. If you have not downloaded this, you need to do so. Follow this link:
    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/downlo...

  • zabrina liang Nov 30, 2008

    The Garmin has an internal memory, call Garmin to see if you can have that upgraded. Usually, when a computer freezes up, one of the reaons is lack of memory to support the data. Otherwise, return your Garmin for a different model. If you want the same model, ask and make sure you be replaced with a brand new one, not a refurbished model. Those are prone to have little bugs and defective areas in them.

Sir,

Tried some other batteries. Try to change the battery.

Typical battery life of 4 AA alkaline batteries in the Garmin 12 is 24 hours. Weather below
freezing quickly drains alkaline batteries, so lithium batteries are recommended for cold
conditions. All Garmin 12 series contain an interior backup battery to preserve data when the four AA batteries are
removed. This backup battery has a 3 month lifespan on its own, but is rechargeable from the main batteries, so
keep AA batteries installed in the Garmin at all times.

thanks
good luck

If this is the second unit that you have had replaced tells me that the problem could be generic with that model GPS.
Because of this i would take it back, get a refund and go buy a Tomtom instead

    yes you do get alot of units that develop the same problems, you are doing nothing wrong at all, the fact that you don't have a memory card is nothing to do with the problem.
    Try perform a reset of the unit, there could be a glitch in the firmware

    Garmin diagnostics screen / reset
    When you're at the main screen, hold your finger on the time in the
    upper right corner for more than 5 seconds, and you'll get to an info
    screen, and back/next buttons lower right of screen.

    There's some sound diagnostics, and screen tests, and lots of info
    pages - including one with some battery status/statistics. To get out
    of the diagnostic mode, power cycle your unit...and when you do this,
    it will take some time to lock on to satellites.

HI,

There are only to home remedies to fix this problem.One is a hard reset which you have alreasy tried and the other is to update the firmware which you have already tried.

You will have to get this repair because it is a hardware issue.

I think, some times unit is not getting proper GPS signal through its internal antenna so signal processing got freezes. Please check GPS
signal strength bar (on top left of screen) is ok. If its not full, then use external antenna.

Try charging the gps by an external charger through the USB

Posted on Nov 30, 2008

  • SAM ANDERSON Nov 30, 2008

    You have mentioned that it is freezing sometimes may be its due to weak signal at that particular location . Your antenna connection might be loose or it might have been damaged . Try with external antenna if this works then you need to replace internal antenna .

If you are using same memory card, it can be a faulty memory card.

Try a replacement memory card.

If you are connecting the module to a different device, then the connection cable or the other device may be the problem.

    If you are installing additional software, or always the same maps, and using the same memory card, then one of them can be the problem.

    Reset the nuvi to factory settings following the procedure on the user manual , and see if you can get rid of the problem.

    Reset the unit, holding the power button to the left for 10 seconds then let go of the switch to restart the unit.

    there are many factory problems with 760, see here:nuvi 760 - won't turn on - gps Discussion Forum
    if the reset does not work call them back.

Unit freezes at the loading maps stage

Yes! Yes! The exact same thing is happening to my nuvi 1300 right now one month after yours. What did you figure out? Can someone help? I've also tried to do the clear the device by pushing the right hand corner of the screen while powering on and I do not get any sort of 'would you like to clear everything?' message that I'm suppose to get. I'm going to check into battery recall that I heard about, but I don't think it's for the Nuvi 1300. Someone help! A :)

It will not power on. The name garmin is on the screen with a black background.what could the problem be?

A Garmin Nuvi 1300 that won't start, freezes on 'loading maps,' or is acting erratically is symptomatic of having corrupt firmware.

To correct this, I recommend backing up your favorites, clearing all user data, and if it still is stuck, then updating your Nuvi firmware.

Follow these three steps to take to get your Garmin Nuvi 1300 running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Garmin nuvi 1340 freezes on start up

If your nuvi series device is freezing on the map screen but still providing voice prompts there are two steps you can try to resolve the issue including updating the software using WebUpdater* and performing a master reset.

To download WebUpdater and update the software:
  1. Go to http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  2. Follow the on screen instructions.
To perform a master reset on your nuvi series device: CLICK HERE

Warning: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.
