You likely have a bad thermocouple. Go to a hardware store and pick one up. You will need to shut off your furnace and remove the little copper wire that goes into your gas valve where you are holding down the button to light the pilot. Don't remove the larger silver tube that is for your pilot valve to supply the gas to the pilot.  Follow the copper line and try to pull straight down out of the pilot assembly and it may slide right out. If it doesn't you will need to remove the pilot assembly so go ahead and remove the larger silver tube from the gas valve as well. Take out the one or two screws mounting the pilot assembly usually a 1/4 inch or 5/16 nutdriver should be the proper tool.  Once removed unscrew the thermocouple and put in the new one. Reassemble. Careful not to bend your silver pilot tubing too much otherwise you will need to replace that as well. Always check for gas leaks around your pilot tube after reinstalling parts.

Pilot light ok when release finger pilot goes out

Your thermo couple is bad. Thats the copper tube that goes from the gas valve to the pilot. It senses thats the pilot is lit. Thats not working thats why it goes out. You can get a new one at lowes or home depot for about ten bucks its pretty easy to change just dont kink it when you put it in. It will just plug in at the pilot and screw in at at gas valve.

Open a nearby window to let in plenty of air and see if problem continues.
Problem might be something simple like vent backflow blowing out pilot, or more complicated like bad gas control, or combination of problems listed below.
Suspects include:
Faulty gas control thermostat.
Air in gas line.
Low gas pressure.
Hot attic air.
Insufficient air, or dirty air intake.
Dirty combustion parts, and tubes.
Thermocouple not sitting in flame.
Thermocouple tightened too much. Finger tight + 1/4 turn. No joint compound or teflon tape.
Bad venting.
Backflow of air down vent pipe caused by tight house and/or other vent fans in house.

Can't light a vulcan heritage gas heater, the pilot light lights, but as soon as I try to lift my finger off the button to ignite the heater, the pilot flame always goes off.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

What you are experiencing is the lack of a signal from the thermocouple to the gas valve. I.e. the thermocouple is not passing heat information at all. This is caused by either a defective thermocouple, a dirty mating area where the thermocouple connects to the gas valve or... an improperly positioned thermocouple that is not "in the flame" with the pilot lit.

  • First make sure the FIRE end of the thermocouple is in the flame when lit. (reposition if necessay)
  • Next disconnect the thermocouple by unscrewing the fitting on the top of the gas valve. (No gas will come out) Clean the metal mating area as best you can and then re-install the thermocouple. Just a good snug fit. Once you feel it come snug add 15 degrees of tightening motion with a wrench.
Attempt to light the pilot... wait 45 seconds to 1 minute while holding the pilot button down before letting it up. If it stays lit.... GOOD JOB. If it goes out the next step is to replace the thermocouple. If after replacing the thermocouple it does not stay lit the remedy is to replace the gas valve. There are no short cuts and the sequence of repairs is just as I stated in order.

You can remove your old thermocouple and walk in to almost any appliance parts supply or Plumbing and heating supply to purchase the correct thermocouple without a part number. They will match it up with yours.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Have a Reddy Heater RCP275 propane gas heater. If able to light - the heater will burn for 1-5 min. but then goes out. Sometimes burner will not light at all when the red pilot button is released. At times...

Sounds like the igniter needs to be replaced. It is normal for a heater to run five or so minutes that means the thermostat is working. then restart when the temp calls for heat but if the igniter does not work it will not light up again.

Williams debonair wall heater + pilot light problems

THE flame from the pilot should shoot past the thermo-couple and heat this up and make a small amount of mili- amps to prove the pilot light is lit. ..So if the flame doesn,t go past the thermo-couple it won, make mili-amps or its tme to change out the thermo-couple, They only cost lest than $8:00 and you can change it!
