Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Magnavox MWC24T5A I have this combo TV vcr/DVD that started shutting itself down right after you push the power button to turn it on. I found one other person that posted the same problem and no one has responded. I do have an electronics degree but don't know much about TV repair....except the tube voltage dangers, etc. When I push the power on button, the unit turns on for about 3 seconds and then shuts down. THere is no DVD or VCR tape in the drives. Thanks Larry

It is most likely a bad IR diode underneath the prisim in the VCR, common failure for those combination units. I have used a simple generic diode from Radio Shack or you can spend a little more and get the politically correct part from almost any electronics vendor like Vance Baldwin ot Tritronics.
Be observant when installing these they are polorized and go in only one direction. Getting one in reverse will burn up the new diode instantly.

Take a close look where the plastic button was--it if there would engage a tiny round black rubber like button---using a pencil eraser see if you can gently push the button.

I don't have the remote for my tv and need to get into the menu to turn on captions, how can I do that? have a Magnavox 24'' TV/DVD/VCR Combo MWC24T5

On some sets you can push the Up and Down channel buttons at the same time.

You might also buy a new remote:

Trying to get my directv remote to control this TV but none of the Sylvania codes recommended work any ideas

slide the mode switch to tv, hold down mute and select until the light blinks enter "9-9-1-------1" when the lights finish blinking start pushing push the channel up button. this is a code search. It will transmit every code it knows one at a time. when the tv turns off you've found a code that works. turn it back on, try the volume and see if it works correctly. when finished press select.
most tv/dvd and/or vcr combos won't work with tv codes.
Directv has posted many new codes on their website for combo tv's Go to [ www.directv.com/remote ]to look up the latest codes read the programming section for the remote as there are many customizable features on the remote that most people aren't aware of. good luck

No remote specific to Sharp combo unit..how to turn off closed captionning

on some models the menu button is on the front disguised as the volume up/down or channel up/down buttons. you have to push both up/down buttons on either one of these to bring up the menu.

What do I do when my Emerson TV keeps turning off by itself?

I had the same problem with mine turning off after 3-5 seconds. After much research I found a suggestion that on some combo units the vcr part could have a power supply cutout if it is not working correctly. I tried to insert a tape and found that the tape mechanism would not accept a tape. I used a little bit of force and managed to insert a tape. I then played the tape forwards and backwards and the power stayed on! I ejected the tape and found the TV then worked just fine. The power has now been on for over one hour. I hope this give you another avenue to try and fix your problem.
