Question about Soundstream XTA880.2 Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

Amp staying in protection mode

Brand new xta880 wont stay on - the protection circuit light comes on as soon as the amp does, then goes off and doesn't come back on until I reset the remote/head unit. Same results each time. I tried unplugging my ground wire to see the effect and when I did the amp stayed in protection mode without turning off. I performed an exact switch from a alpine amp and after soundstream wouldn't work switched em right back and it works fine. The Alpine is only a 200 watt mono tho. Any ideas here? Weak ground? Not enough power to the amp? Is this amp a heavy power consumer? thanks, in advance, and happy new year!

Re: amp staying in protection mode

No, this amp is not a heavy power consumer- matter of fact it takes very little power to run.Maybe you should check the fuses on the amp to see if they are what is recommended. Also check your fuse kit to your amp- your fuse might not be big enough. If neither works take it back where u got it.

Sounds to me like the amp is going into protection mode. Try placing one sub on the amp with very little gain. One of the biggest reason why this happens is because the subwoofers are wired wrong. What is the brand and model number for your amp?

Should the amplifier go into protect mode, simply disconnect all RCA and speaker leads, while keeping +12 volt, power ground and remote leads connected.

1. Now turn the amplifier back on, and if the diagnostic LED lights, the amplifier has an internal fault.

2. If not, plug the RCA cables back, and reset the amplifier. If it goes into diagnostic now, the fault lies in the input, either with bad cables or source unit.

3. If the amplifier seems fine with RCA cables plugged in, connect the speakers, one at a time, and if one of the speakers or its wiring is faulty, it will activate the diagnostic

The protection light comes on and stays on

I had this problem a few years back and it was because I didn't have a solid connection to ground. My grounding wire (which was bolted to the frame of the car) had rusted through and therefore wasn't providing a solid connection to complete the circuit. Try looking at your grounding connection and get back to me.
Other problems could be a blown AMP (there is a voltage regulator within these amps and if this goes, the protection might turn on).

Amp wont get out of protection

Most likely you'll need to do a hardware reset for the chip to reboot its internal memory. You most likely got a spike in current through the 'brain' of the circuit and locked up the interface. You A) could search the enclosure for a small soft touch button, or B)open up the contents (risk this may void warrantee) and find it on the internal circuit board, or C)check the manual for suggested method. But more realistically, you need to check your system to determine what caused the initial case.

Protection light keep coming on

Make sure your head unit is off.

Reset the amplifier using the manufacturers specified method. Usually this is just power down briefly and then back up. I usually pull the amp fuse and make sure all LED's on the amp go out. Wait 10 seconds, and then put the fuse back in.

If the LED comes back on when you reconnect power, without the HU being on, you've got a bad amp.

If the LED does not come back on after reset, then check for short circuits on the speaker leads. Still leaving everything off, from the amp terminals, remove both wires to a specific speaker and check for shorts.

Car amp

The most common reason for this is shorted output transistors. To confirm that the problem is in the amplifier, disconnect all speaker wires and the RCA cables. If the amp still goes into protection, check the DC voltage across the B+ and ground terminals. It should not drop below 11 volts. Also check the remote voltage.

If the amp continues to go into protect with no external connections (other than B+, remote and ground) and the voltage remaiins above 11v, the amp is defective.
