My Honda FG100 tiller's tines spin when not in the dirt but as soon as I put them in the dirt they stop. What could be wrong with it?

My guess is the clutch shoes bite enough to turn when unloaded but slip when loaded. Try for a view of the parts. You will need your chassis number off the machine label as there are several versions of the FG100. A good handyperson/home mechanic should be able to change these / establish the fault. Parts are at your local Honda garden agent or online.

Have a Honda FG110 - today I found a large puddle of "clean" oil under it! does not appear to be engine oil .. gear case maybe?

Look at the shaft seals on the output shaft where the tines are attached. If it's wet then the oil came from the gear box.

If the motor will accelerate, does it sound like there is a load on the motor? If the motor accelerates easy and does not seem to be under a load you may have a problem with the clutch. Are you getting power thru the clutch to the gearbox?

Motor runs but the tines want turn

Either the clutch is gone or the transmission gear is stripped. These need to be properly greased annually so that this happens less. The transmission replacement can be done but the dealer will charge you about what you paid for it ($250) or if you know someone handy they can order the parts here: and rebuild it for you. It would cost about $85 for a full transmission rebuild.

Good luck.

You can buy parts for this from
I had to replace the tine shaft w/worm wheel assy. This is usually the weak point in the transmission. The worm is made out of brass.

Honda FG100 Tiller - Tines wont move

I took the transmission apart and the gears were fine. The friction pads on the centrifugal clutch don't seem to make full contact with the drum. Does anyone know what the thickness of the friction pads are suppose to be? I used some belt dressing on the pads and got some movement on the tines. With no wear on the gears, I guess I'll be replacing the clutch.
