also my computer is a dell studio 15 laptop running vista it has a main hard drive and a back up drive built in
i connect the drive to the enclosure then to my computer my computer tells me it has installed a generic usb drive but when i go to windows explorer .... nothing.
i have put the jumper on master slave and cable select and same result every time.
any ideas?? thanks in advance!
First, neither of the links work. The amazon shows a power adapter and the Seagate defaults to their home page. But I think I get the idea. You purchased a usb drive enclosure and a new hard drive and now it doesn't work.
The problem is that the hard drive has not been initiated, formatted or assigned a drive letter.
Plug in the drive
Click on the Start button
Right click on Computer
A screen opens, click on Disk Management
All the drives known and unknown will appear on the right.
Find the drive that says unknown, right click over the text and select Initialize Disk.
When done, right click the blank space to the right labelled Unallocated and select new simple volume then follow the steps to format and assign a drive letter.
If you are only going to be using this drive on this computer then format ntfs, if it maybe be connected to other devices including Mac, you may want to use fat32 or exfat.
Whats the Difference Between FAT32 exFAT and NTFS

If your running XP , go to control panal , Admin tools>Computer Management >Storage > Disk Management . Look for it there . If its there see if it says what file system . If none format it . If it isnt there then chack the jumper on the hard drive it self . It should be set to master or cable select .

Go to the contro panel > Administrative Tools > computer management > Look in the left side pane and click on "disc management". Your drives will appear here including ones that may not be "initialized". If you see a drive that has no letter, maybe just a number like drive 03, this drive is not initialized and needs to be done if it is to be recognized by the computer. With the disc management window open, look where it lists the disc. Your main hard drive should be disc 0. If this external is connected via a usb, this disc maybe listed as disc 01 or just 1. Right below the name it will say that the disc is offline. If this is the case, right click in that gray area where the name is and click on "initialize". A series of windows will open asking you to click ok on what kind of drive it is to be used for. Just go with the choice that is already given and click ok. The drive will then be initialized and it will then be ready for formatting. Simply right click on the area next to the name that says unallocated and select format, choose ntfs file system and the size of the partition if you want to make several partitions, this is the time. then choose quick format. The drive will the make the partitions and give the partitions drive letters. Your drive is all set up.
If it comes up and says that "the device is not ready" when you try to initialize it, then the drive or the interface is bad.
