There are a couple of things I am thinking. Check the motor itself for a reset button. The other thing, is that the circuit board might have a reset or have a portion of the board burnt. Depending on the type of internal wiring in the motor, there could be a thermal fuse inside the windings of the motor that is melted. (not an easily fixed problem). There might be a fuse on the circuit board that controls the power to the motor itself. It might be blown.
A number of things to think about.

I totally agree, but that modification should be left to a trained technician to perform, otherwise you may permanently damage the opener.
It is a fairly simple and quick change to make and shouldn't cost you more than $30 for a technician to perform.
