Of course it can be plugged into a GFI outlet. Sounds like you have a compressor problem.

Refrig. sometimes trips GFI, sometimes not. Unplugged plug shows 5 ohms between power contacts. What's up?

Have you checked the GFI with some other appliance? Like a mixer. Sometimes the GFI are overly sensitive.

My hotpoint keeps tripping out and won't stay on checked socket and plug both are fine

I assume you are talking about an electrical kitchen unit in a camper or trailer unit since you identify it as a Hotpoint (TM). Granted, it is my assumption, but I think it is valid.

From what you have said, I have to assume, also, that you are dealing with AC voltage not DC and it is standard 117 VAC.

Here are a couple of thoughts that I think are valid. First, look at the plug fiture itself. If it his a three-wire unit and has a reset button in the middle, I assume it is a ground-fault-isolater unit. GFI (ground fault isolator) units trip out, cutting the power flow. They are a safety feature (for further vehicle safety information, please visit Safecar infoCar safety Insurance Magazine ) in motorhomes, campers and trailers where it is possible for water to spill while you are using things like electrical kitchen equipment, posing a danger. GFI circuits cut out instantly a problem is found, ending the danger.

It is possible that the GFI plug, itself, is faulty and shorting out, causing the problem you note.

It is equally possible that the Hotpoint (TM) device itself is faulty and shorting out. It could easily cause circuit breakers to trip, cutting power, in this situation. This, it seems to me, is the problem you are describing. If you have any further information, please let me know here by placing a comment below.

I just got a bandsaw. When I plug it in in my garage the GFI circuit trips. When I bought it it ran fine, the guy I bought it from ran it for a minute or two to show me. I cleaned it up some, took it...

GFI usually trips from unequal current levels between the hot and neutral lines unless the saw starting-current-draw is more than the ampere rating of the GFI breaker. You may have to wire a special circuit for this saw if it is a heavy duty unit. If the previous owner was sawing metal, that can leave particles within the motor that may cause electrical leakage to ground which will trip the GFI. Hope this helps!

Frig stopped running.

Maybe over pulling more amps the the GFCI curcuit can handle. Check all the GFCI plug and verify if there are anything else plugged in. Including hair dryers and / or flat irons.

Refrigerators and freezers should not be run on a GFI outlet the it will weaken and start tripping. Most manufacturers now print this in the owners manual.

My under counter Uline refrigerator/ice maker suddenly trips GFI

I here this alot. If you have a compressor on a gfi the compressor after awhile would trip it. The compressor start amps is usually higher than the gfi is rated. So you have 2 choices. Replace the GFI and try to find one with higher amp ratings. Or install a normal outlet for your unit. Your code will usually call for a gfi, If it does then replace with a new gfi.
To explain the start amps on a compressor depending on your model could be 10 amps. This is for a split second. However the gfi can become week after time. You can also try to plug the unit into a normal outlet to make sure everything is good on the unit. I believe it is the gfi

GFI outlet is tripping because of refrigerator in the garage.

Hi: Yes, replace the GFI outlet. A refrigerator should not be plugged into one for what you are experiencing and food loss. This was an easy answer for me, but unfortunately not for you The owners manual covers this, but us men don't read them (Well I had to as I worked with them for 30 years). Good luck, Jeff

Fridge is popping my GFI switch

refrigerators are not supposed to be plugged into gfi outlets as they can operate normally and still trip the gfi protector. try plugging the unit into an unprotected outlet and it should work fine. incidentally you'll probably have to replace the gfi outlet as it has probably weakend from being used on the refrig.
