Question about Radio Shack Pro-94 Scanner

2 Answers

Local police frequencies 155.490 and 156.150 act like a birdie frequencies. I cannot pick up these well used frequencies on my scanner. I have to lock them out when I would like to get them due to the action. Please advise.

Does the same thing happen when you remove your antenna? If so, it's an internal birdie. If not, does anything change when you move the scanner in the room or if you take the scanner in the car? If so, perhaps an external antenna would help.

Otherwise you could always do what I do -- if it's a very local transmission, try programming the fq's in 5 KHz off -- like 155.495 or 155.485 for 155.490. Sometimes that's enough to get off the "birdie" but still close enough to copy the traffic.

I have a Uniden bc95xlt scanner! it is less than 1 yr. old. it will lock on to a channel and not unlock to continue scanning. I can't find my paperwork to prove age of scanner! Pls. Help!

Hi Jan,

It sounds to me as if your scanner is locking on to a 'BIRDIE', which is an internally generated frequency in the scanner, all scanners have this by default, your user manual usually has a page, near the back of the manual, with known 'birdies', and there a lots.

When your scanner locks onto a 'BIRDIE', which is a frequency with no voice audio, the best thing to do is press Lockout button, during the scan, your scanner will, if there is no other problem with it, continue to scan, until it finds another 'BIRDIE', then you do the same thing as I've described, until you've locked out all the 'BIRDIES'.

I hope this info was useful.

Cheers,
Peter.

I cant listen to the police

First, make sure that you have the correct frequency for your local police. You can find a comprehensive database of active frequencies in your area by visiting:
www.Reference.com

Program the frequency or frequencies using the instructions in the scanner's operating manual. and you should be all set. If you need the manual, you can download and print it, at no cost, here:
http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BC60XLT-1om.pdf

NOTE: If the frequency database shows that your local police are using a trunked system, you will not be able to monitor them using the BC60XLT-1. Trunked systems require a trunking scanner. Many law enforcement agencies are also using digital systems for their communications. If that's the case in your area you'll need a scanner capable of monitoring APCO-25 digital transmissions.

Local police, sheriff and fire are not received anymore, but can pick up distant city police, airports and hwy patrol. Have Pro 2096 model and have not tried any fixes.

With the distant services still coming in, it's probable that your local agencies have changed from single-frequency operations to a trunked system or, if already trunked, that frequency/user assignments have been updated within the system. For the latest on active frequencies and systems in your area, visit:

Scanner not picking up local police-Fire freq

Do you still receive NOAA weather frequencies? Sounds like your local agencies have switched from simplex/standard frequency operation to trunking. I suggest you visit www.RadioReference.com to view the latest on active frequencies and systems in your area.

I cant get it to pick up the police what do i

First you need to know what type systems and what frequencies are in use in your area. If your local law enforcement agencies have switched to trunking systems, as many communities have, your scanner will not be able to receive/follow them. You should, however, still be able to pick up fire, EMS, etc. For system descriptions and active frequencies, visit RadioReference.com and/or CityFreq.com.
