The battery is damaged and has to be replaced, take the battery out and should be able to use it on AC power until you get a replacement

I need to replace the small fan on back of gateway sx2801-01e, how do I get it out after removing side panel?

Hal,

You're going to have to help me out here. I don't see it,

http://blog.itechtalk.com/2010/review-on-gateway-sx2801-01e/

Scroll the page down to the bottom, and the photo that shows the Side Panel removed.

All I see is the Processor fan, and the fan for the Power Supply.
That is the metal case with the odd shape, at the bottom right of the computer view.

Rear view of Gateway SX2801 series of Desktop PC's,

http://support.gateway.com/s/desktop/2009/gateway/sx/sx2800/SX2800rv.shtml

If this is the fan that is not working, replace the Power Supply.

Inside that Power Supply are Capacitors.

A capacitor is designed to slowly build up a charge, then release it all at once.
There are cameras that use them for their flash units.

A crude example would be a large swimming pool, filled up by a garden hose; then one wall of the pool is taken down all at once.

Even after the Power Supply is unplugged from power, those 'Caps' can hold a charge for weeks, months, a lot of times over a Year.

If your fingers, accidentally touch the terminals on the bottom of a capacitor, the charge can be released to YOU!

If your fingers accidentally complete a circuit, that one, or more capacitors are in; the charge can be released to YOU!

Shock ranges from BAD to FATAL.

[The Input Stage uses Capacitors that can hold a charge, of Up To 100 Volts ]

Blue light but no power

If you have already tried disconnecting the power-cord from the PC for 1 min.....

Then you need to have the Power Supply Unit tested at a local PC repair shop.

I don't charge walk-ins for that service, but some shops might.

Gateway dx300 hard drive

Gateway DX300 Desktop PC is a series.

Could be a Gateway DX300MC, or DX300QS, or DX300S, or DX300X,

http://support.gateway.com/support/supinfo/index.asp?pg=2&file=DX300series.html

Fortunately all models in the series use a SATA harddrive.

[ Gateway DX300X Desktop PC used as an example,

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/DX300/1008555/1008555nv.shtml

In the list click on - Components
On this page scroll down to the bold subheading - Harddrives

All models came with a Western Digital harddrive, but it doesn't matter what the harddrive manufacturer is, that you use ]

What size in GB amount? Depends on what you want. I myself wouldn't go more than 320GB.
That is because your anti-virus program has to sift through the harddrive.

The larger the harddrive, the longer it takes.

For more capacity, I would install a 1TB harddrive into an external enclosure, and use it connected to the computer, with it's USB cable.
(It will also come with an additional external power supply)

But that is just me.

Bear in mind that a new harddrive has no Operating System on it.
You have to purchase a genuine copy of Windows, and install it.
(This is if your harddrive presently on that Gateway is bad)

[ Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer ]

Gateway GM 5072 won't turn on, it just flicker.

One of two things a clogged up CPU fan and block may be the contributor over heated and possibly fried the board. The other issue may be a bad power supply unit, replace the unit and reboot. John

I have a Gateway Desktop computer, and I have had it for a couple years, and it just wouldn't turn on. So I need to know if that means that computer is dead?

Check for any lights. Usually a computer would have a flea light on the motherboard as soon as you plug it in. If it doesn't have a flea light, start with the power supply. Swap the power cord of the monitor with the power supply of your desktop. If it still would not show power, try replacing the power supply. Worse case, you may need to replace the motherboard of your computer which would cost a lot.

What are the symtoms of a failing power supply on Gateway GT4024? Thanks, JEL

Some symptoms of a failing power supply unit on this unit are, computer does not start automatically when power button is press, the place where the power supply is located is getting way to hot unlike before and then computer just shut down itself without any notice. IF you have these symptms you might want to consider already replacing the power supply on this computer.

My gateway 700 xl doesnt boot

Unplug the power from you 700xl and from you monitor. Try removing the cmos battery and reinstalling it. Then, plug everything back in and try restarting. If it continues to give you the yellow light, you may need to replace the CMOS battery, especially if it is more than two years old.

Another thing to consider is if your power supply is underpowered for the number of external devices you have plugged into it (i.e., cd, dvd, external hard drives, printers, pci cards, etc). Gateway installed very low powered power supplies in their 700xl desktop computers. Usually only around 250 watts maximum.

If you are replacing the power supply with another 250 watt maximum power supply, and you have a lot of external devices plugged in, you may need at least a 350 watt power supply....if your CMOS battery is not the problem.
