Check first audio properties, in control panel.

On windows the mic is disabled by default, you need to manually enable audio in, either from control panel, or from audio card mixer.

You can download everything that was on the CD from the Creative website. Make sure you have the exact card model number handy, as there were tens of versions of this card, all called the same on the box. Look for markings on the card itself.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1...its installed properly.no evidence of problems in device manager tab...i tried the diagnostics tool and it fails the record part. i can hear the sine signal but...

Have you tried enabling the "Mic Boost" in the advanced system sound settings? Have you ensured that the Mic is not muted in the OS sound control panel? What application are you using to record? Make sure to set your app's input device to the proper card/mic. You'll find that in the Options or Preferences. You shoulds also go to the system sound settings and make sure the audio record device matches your card. If playback is your only problem, go to the system sound settings and make sure the audio playback device matches your card. Let me know if any of this helped. Good luck.

well the ports on the card could be shot and the card might have been installed by a person with a static charge built on thier hands without them knowing, which can cause the card's electronics to fry and be ALMOST completely disabled. try using a different mic or taking the card out and re-installing it.
