Question about Mitsubishi WS-55513 55" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Mitsubishi ws55513 Hello! I have the blinking light of death and I have replaced the capacitors and I still have the blinking light. The caps were bulged out so they were bad but once I replaced the new ones, the tv still has the light. I tried putting the circuit board in without the case to insure that it was put in correctly, and that still didnt work. I tried putting a paper clip on each fuse one by one and plugged in the tv but that was no help. I am going to test the fuses tomorrow with a multimeter. Is there anything else I can test? Any suggestions on what to do next? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Kim

I checked those and they are all good. Can I check the capacitors with the same multimeter to see if they are all working?

Otherwise, what would be my next thing to check.

    Thanks in advance! Kim

There isnt a chirping sound. But if I push the reset button there is a clicking sound in the back middle of the tv. Are you familar with that? Would that mean I should test the HOT? If so, can you please explain how to do that and what that looks like.

In the meantime, I will test the capacitors.

    I great appreciate your help.

    Thanks, Kim

Hello! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I have done a little researching and I am not sure how to test the HOT. How would I know if it has a built in transistor test?

Sorry about my lack of knowlegge, , this is my first time fixing a tv.

    Thank you for your help.

How do I know if there is a built in transistor? Sorry, I am just learning all this and if there isnt one, what is the forward and reverse bias? Is that a tool that I can get??

    Thanks, Kim

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me". My compliments on accomplishing the replacement of the 4 1000 uF/16V capacitors on the DM board.

To your concern, the blinking is still there even after having replaced the caps, a friendly reminder, the capacitors are polarized, there are specific +/-. Additionally, you may have to check the pico fuses. They would be on the backside of the DM board and would be very close near to the solder points of the 4 caps. They are marked FB900, FB901 and FB902. Rating would be 125V 4amp. Possible source maybe here.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

    Appreciate the very quick postback.

In answer to your query, yes. It is possible to check the capacitors with the use of a multimeter. However, it is preferable that they be check out of circuit, meaning they have to be de-soldered/removed. To test, set the tester to X1, apply the test leads to the two terminals, at the onset, the deflection reading would be towards the right (if analog) or low resistance (if digital). maintaining the same position, the reading would slowly move towards the left or increasing resistance. Reversing the red/black test prods would yield same readings. These then indicates a relatively good capacitor.

If the blinking is accompanied by a chirping sound, pls test the HOT (horizontal output transistor).

The clicking sound would be a relay engaging (or disengaging).

This image might help even if it were a different brand/model.

If the HOT will check bad, then suspect the FBT likewise to be bad.

    • How do I test if the HOT - some DVM/VOM have
built-in transistor testers. Should this be not available, the three
terminals of the transistor could be tested like a diode with forward
and reverse bias. In some designs, the transistor has a limiting
resistor connected to the base/emitter while in others, a damper diode
is built-in to the collector/emitter. In some designs, a different type
of transistor maybe used where the normal tests could not be applied.
There are also instances where the test would yield false positive
results and could be verified by checking for leaks at high resistance

    • or the flyback is bad? - requires a ring' test,
where an external instrument/device injects pulses to the FBT primary
circuit and check its HV output as well as secondary voltages

    • What is the procedure for removing a flyback? -
you would need a soldering iron and a desoldering tool. The soldering
iron provides the heat to melt the soldering lead while the desoldering
tool provides the suction to remove the melted lead.

I understand, at your convenience then and make good with the Thanksgiving.
