If you do not put a password on the file what do you think security is?

What are you trying to do? (Or prevent?)

it really depends on the purpose of this. If you want it so that you can distribute the document so that others can read but not edit it, then I would print it to PDF and add password security for editing but not viewing.

Do you want to prevent someone from accessing the file or encrypting it? You can prevent another user on that computer from reading the file bye using Windows security policies (or file permissions).

Remove password from hardrive in bios

Before your computer loads your operating system, it starts by running the BIOS program, which is extremely important because of its various options.

You can even set a password on your hard drive so that nobody can use your laptop computer without your password.

Once you put in the password into your hard drive, you can only remove it by accessing the BIOS system and deleting the password completely from the memory of your computer.

Save all of your important files on an external hard drive or similar storage device.
This is a precaution to avoid losing all of your files when making changes to the BIOS.

Then, restart your computer.
Wait for your computer's operating system to ask you to access the BIOS menu.

This may be at different times, depending on the manufacturer of your computer.
It can ask you when the manufacturer's logo comes up, or on a separate screen indicating for you to click the "F2" button on your keyboard to start.

Access the BIOS menu by clicking the key or combination of keys that you are informed to click. This information can be found in your computer's manual, but it changes between different companies.

Commonly used keys for this process are "F10", "F2" and "Delete."
Go to the BIOS option that contains your hard disk drive password.

The option that will lead you to this password varies immensely due to different laptop models, but it may appear as something such as "Advanced" or "Security."

Look for the option for changing the password, which should say "User Password," and then click "Enter." Put in the existing password and then click "Enter."

Do not enter any password into the blank fields asking you to enter a new password, and this will remove the password.

Exit the menu by clicking "Save and Exit." Click "Enter."

How to Break MS Word Password Protected Document?

<p>If you have read the novel "<span>The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo</span>", you must remember that there was a character said free programs were available on the web to <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/wordpasswordrecovery.html"><b>break MS Word password</b></a> protected document. If you did a search then you will find that there are thousands of free download of word password breakers. All of them said MS Word document that are password protected can be opened easily with a few minutes. Is it true? This article will tell you.<br /> <p> <br /> <p>For what it's worth, it is my understanding. Microsoft Word offers three levels of password protection. These protection methods can all be used together or separately:<br /> <p> <br /> <ul> <li><b>Password to open:</b> Requires a user to enter a password to open and view the document. If the Word document was set a password to open, the entire MS Word file is encrypted with the RC4 stream cipher.</li> <li><b>Password to modify: </b>Requires a user to enter a password to read and make changes to the document. When the Word file was set a password to modify, the password can be viewed or changed with a hex editor.</li> <li><b>Read-only recommended: </b>Prompts the user to open the document as read-only if they do not need to make any changes to the content.</li></ul> <p> <br /> <p>In some case, your document was protected from editing and do not really encrypt the underlying document, so a malevolent human could open the underlying XML of the docx file and edit it directly. Other forms of password protection actually encrypt the file. If you do this kind of password protection then the file should not be opened without a password. Malicious users could still try to open the file with a variety of techniques, but it would be very difficult. Some of these techniques include:<br /> <p> <br /> <ul> <li><b>Brute force and dictionary attacking:</b> this attack basically involves the Word password breaker tool trying every possibility of every password to see if they successfully <b>break word password</b>. So the way for you to combat this attack is to set a strong password. </li> <li><b>Rainbow tables:</b> Word password breaker didn't need to know how Microsoft Word saves its encrypted file. If it were possible to get hold of the hashed password and the encryption algorithm used, a rainbow table might let you <b>break the word password</b>. </li></ul> <p> <br /> <p><b>MS Word Password Breaker</b><br /> <p><br /> SmartKey <a href="http://recoverlostpassword.com/products/wordpasswordrecovery.html">Word Password Recovery</a> is easy-to-use software designed to unlock, crack, <b>break word password</b> protected document in less than 2 minutes and all by yourself. Start computer up asks me for password then it shuts down what is going on? It won't stay on.

computer loads basic system files threw the bios (Basic input output system) When the user set's a bios password it will not load the windows environment or win loader files until the bios password is entered. if you see a black window asking for password your seeing a bios password prompt.
Manny people buy computers aftermarket or used and cannot get past this. best tip is open the tower and pop the bios battery out and reboot with it out. go to the bios setup window and disable security now, put the battery back in and you will not see the password prompt again. if physical access to inside of tower imposable then we stop here.
If the password is a windows login prompt you will have to login safe mode to disable the faulty driver causing the issue.

once windows loads go to start then run and type msconfig then press enter. you will see microsoft configuration window and will go to the services tab at the bottom put a check in hide all microsoft services, now uncheck all the ones left and make sure the checkmark is on before doing so. this is goingto allow windows to load normally without third party drivers and you can fix the problem by enableing them till it fails to boot again.

Lost password to Windows 7, XP, Vista, 2000, 2003 ?

1) Hope you learn from your mistakes for the next time. Write the password down and put it in a safe place... and remember where you put it. Or better yet, use a password that makes sense to you... Or the best of all, create a Password Reset Disk (details abou this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305)

2) The "brute force" alternative: Re-install Windows from its installation CD/DVD (which I hope you didn't lose too). This will erase all programs and files you have in your computer. You'll need your Product Key (you have this, right). You may want to try to do an "update previous instalation" (which will keep your programs and files), but it may not remove the password at all.

3) Get a password recovery tool (for free, if possible). Many Windows versions (especially XP) do not like if you just 'delete' the password from an account, like some programs can do. If you do this you may lose access to many files and programs. This a security feature embedded in Windows.

a) Ophcrack: This Windows password cracker is by far the best free Windows password recovery tool available. It's fast and easy enough for a first time password cracker with a basic knowledge of Windows.
With Ophcrack, you don't need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost passwords. Simply visit the site, download the free ISO image, burn it to a CD and boot from the CD. The Ophcrack program starts, locates the Windows user accounts, and proceeds to recover (crack) the passwords - all automatically (access to files and programs will be kept, so you will regain full access to the computer).
In a test on a Windows 7 PC, Ophcrack recovered the 10-character password to an administrator account in 40 seconds. Ophcrack supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.
Download Ophcrack from here (choose the correct OS): http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/download.php?type=livecd

b) Offline NT Password & Registry Editor: This one works basically by erasing your Windows password instead of recovering it (ths is where you can lose access to some files and programs). You can then simply log in to your account without entering a password.
Like Ophcrack, you boot to a burned CD created with the Offline NT Password & Registry Editor ISO file.
If you like this "password deleting" strategy then I highly recommend this program. Offline NT Password & Registry Editor works basically the same way as PC Login Now, but this program is free.
I tried Offline NT Password & Registry Editor on a Windows XP PC and it worked immediately without problem. It should work equally well with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.

There are some other utilities out there, but finding FREE ones that actually work is time consuming. I'll post them here as I can.

How to protect MS Excel file using password?

In Microsoft Excel, you can protect a single cell, group of cells on a worksheet or an entire workbook by applying password so that unauthorized person can not display as well as modify your document. You can apply two types of password.
Password to open the document:
If it is applied then you have to give the correct password to open the workbook. Otherwise you cannot open the workbook.
Password to modify the document:
If it is applied then you have to give the correct password to modify the workbook. Otherwise your workbook is opened but you cannot modify the workbook. It means that your workbook becomes read-only.
To apply a password to MS Excel document, follow the given steps:
First click on "Tools" menu and select the "Option" from drop down menu.
A windows dialog box will appear, here select the "Security" tab.
Enter first password in "Password to open" text box under "File encryption settings for this workbook" section and second password in "Password to modify" text box (if required) under" File sharing settings for the workbook" section then click "Ok" button of dialog box.
Microsoft Excel will open "Confirm Password" dialog box for the confirmation of passwords. The maximum length of password is 15 characters.
Re-enter the password to open and password to modify and click "Ok" button of Confirm Password dialog boxes one by one.
