Check and make sure the volume is not on mute and it is turned all the way up. Also check the sound properties through the Control Panel and make sure all the volume knobs are turned up.
Check the device manager to see if there are any warnings in the section called 'Sound, video, and game controllers'. The best way to access the Device Manager is to click Start, right-click Computer(Windows 7) or My Computer(Windows XP) and click Manage. The computer management screen will come up and you'll click on Device Manager. If there is a red X or a yellow ! then run windows updates and see if there are any hardware drivers needing downloaded.

You have to reinstall sound driver, hopfully you have a copy
if you got the hardware updates from Microsoft they often misidentify sound cards and install bad drivers. See if you can isolate the microsoft update for the sound card and or roll back the driver to an older different driver
I had the same problem after re-installing windows. The firewire just
didnt work on the tascam interface. I managed to solve the problem by
upgrading from windows xp to windows vista. I downloaded the vista
drivers from the tascam site and everything sprang back into action.

if you are using windows xp operationg system, use system restore, to restore your system seting by choosing start menu, all programs, asccessories, system tools, system restore. then pick the date where your soundcard was work fine, let your pc restart. done.
