Would help to tell us how old is it, and what are your useing habits, but I can tell you that modern Lithium Ion batteries allways needs to keep some charge on them, completely depleating them and then rechargeing is no good at all for them, if that happens what you can see is that full charge is getting enough for lesser and lesser times, if this is the case you need this fixed unfordunately you need to get a new battery and try to never let it depleated, that way it will serve you for long years.

My idm9 will not charge and they said i had to take out the battery and reset it

hey there...first you need to check and verify which model you have.
  • does you version have a reset button or port?
Alternatively try this.
  • Remove the backup batteries and unplug the unit. Leave it this way for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Replace the batteries and connect the power.
that should do it.

Dell Dimension 4600 will not reboot. I have to turn it off, unplug the power, push the On/off switch for a moment, let it set for 15 min then it will reboot. I have recently upgraded from 256kb ram to 1gb,...

from what you describe, they system will not shutdown. So try the following:
  1. Boot to safe mode (F8 at boot) and then see if the system will reboot from the safe mode.
  2. Boot to the Safe Mode again, Start RUN MSCONFIG, edit the startup group, (Basically uncheck all the items in the startup tab) reboot in the normal mode then see if it shutsdown. If it shutsdown normally, then start adding items back one at a time until you identify the items that were causing the items.

Not getting charged

Hello,

Regarding your problem it is clear that when you unplug the power cord to the power source the computer shutdown itself therefore the problem is in your battery. So my recommendation please replace your battery with an operational one to prevent any further damage of your computer due to power issue. The worst thing it can give to your computer is it can damage the board and eventually it will damage the entire computer if you will not replace the defective battery.

Thanks

How long do I charge battery for when using for first time- no manual provided with laptop

The best way to charge any new battery is to charge it to fullest the first time fully and then drain the battery to full before charging the second time. You should drain your battery completely in order to get a proper backup.

It ia an acer aspire 3004 laptop. The battery charging % remins at 74% all the time and when I remove the power the lap top turnsoff completely.

Hello,

Well it surely shows that the battery is not providing backup to the laptop. There could be few reasons for the same defective and faulty battery is one of them.

However i will give you a step which you should try once and see if it makes any difference.

Method (Power cycle)

You need to remove the battery, adapter and any other device connected to the computer (May be any additional cards or any wires as for Ethernet or speakers or external mouse/keyboard).

Nothing should be connected at all.

Now Press and hold the power button for 25 seconds (It wont show anything). This is a step to release any static charges developed, which may surely caused the kind of issue you are facing.

Now connect the battery and the adapter and check whether it is charging the battery and provides you the backup.

The usual battery life is said to be 1 year. if you are using an older battery, kindly get the same checked as well.

Hope his will help. Please let me know what happens.

Regards
Sammy

Very short battery life on laptop currently lasts about 14 mins from being fully charged to empty

time to get a new battery. For future reference, do not use battery and AC at the same time b/c it will kill the battery. Use one or the other (unless battery is being charge).
