My Webroot Backup Password Won't Work

I recently bought Webroot Spy Sweeper and Anti-Virus. It's working great except for the backup. A pop up box pops up on my screen and asks me for my password. It has my User Name in the box but not the password. I know my password is correct because you guys have emailed it to me many times. What do I do??? I would like a backup but it won't let me log in! It keeps saying that the password is not correct but it is. Please Help!

seems like we all have the same problem.. im very pc savvy but even i haven't figured this one out yet.. though I am about to seriously focus on this problem.. what a pain the **** for a company that's been around so long to have this dumb issue and it seems that many of us have it. I called webroot phone support and that was not good. If you want what they call 'free tech support' lol.. you have to wait like an hour.. if you 'pay' you can get through almost right away. This sounds really sleazy to me. After all if you pay for their product you already paid, who wants to now pay for a problem their product has? I waited an hour with this jazz music playing and I just hung up and then I tried google, and so here I am. I'm going to get to the bottom of this and I gaurantee I'll have the answer by tonight so look out for me.

  • dickeeduda Jan 28, 2009

Solution 1 does NOT fix the problem. All it does is give the 'reinstall' .exe link so all you do is reinstall the exact same program and you have to put in your exact same product key which can be sent to your email address when you enter your email address. Once you reinstall the program it will go through the exact same steps of trying to back up your folders and files and the same idiotic password box will be there.. I left it blank and unchecked all folders to be saved online.. sure enough on reboot I got the same password prompt?? So kliks1 how does this solve anything? I'd love to know how this fixed your problem, or have you realized yourself since that it's still asking you as well for your password.. lol

  • dickeeduda Jan 28, 2009

Solution 1 doesn't work it just reinstalls the same buggy program all over again and asks again for your password. I tried it from start to finish.. maybe Kliks1 can explain how this is a solution.. maybe he didn't include some 'magical' information that needs to be done to finalize this problem.. still waiting..

Same problem 1st of Feb. They are still giving the "uninstall/reboot/reinstall solution, that does not work. Time to move on to a product that works.

    Webroot Internet Security Essentials
I cannot log into the account via the Webroot Program, when I try to I receive the following error:
-"Login to backup failed due to error. Backup Instance not initialized"
If I go to the web: https://myaccount.webrootbackup.com I am able to log in without any problem however this of course does not allow me to backup any data,
this confirms that my password and ID are active.
I have tried so many things with Webroot without success, based on all the entries I can find on the Web I am not the only one with this issue.
I have the latest Rev Level and even installed a new software package.

  • maddog808 Apr 25, 2009

I have just downloaded and installed Webroot Spy Sweeper for my Desktop PC with Windows Vista. When going through the initial setup, it asks for my password for online backup. When I enter it (I know it is correct, because Webroot just emailed it to me), it says it is the wrong password. How do I get this to setup correctly?

  • jerryboiy May 11, 2010

Well, I'm back as promised. I also went the route of regedit as another poster did.. and while his solution sounds pretty good I beg to question if all that is necessary in the regedit if a person simply uninstalls the program in add/remove in control panel and then the folder in 'program files'? That usually does the trick but tell you what if someone really has to go to the lengths of deleting every registry entry well then I'm uninstalling this, otherwise good program, and running towards the next best because nothing is worth this stupidity! BTW, it's hilarious when you hit 'lost password' webroot asks you for your user id which on my computer it says 'bk40' which I never created... so when I enter that, the website says 'error in user id' I just want to strangle the programmer that started all this spysweeper/antivirus ****.. why couldn't webroot just stick with the adware.... that's what they do best. cue the song 'money, money, moneyyyyy... MONEY!!

Sorry guys but I failed to resolve this matter but mostly due to boredom and dissapointment as well as a tad of 'it's not worth the trouble'. Webroot needs to do something about this fast.

OKAY HERE IS THE SOLUTION! FIRST OF ALL IF ANYONE HAS THIS PRODUCT AND MAY HAVE INSTALLED IT ON ANY COMPUTER OTHER THAN THEIR OWN, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS REGISTERED THE PRODUCT AND IN DOING SO, THEY WOULD HAVE CREATED A USER ID: AND PASSWORD: IN THIS CASE YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION BECAUSE IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO GUESS THEIR CHOICE OF NAME AND PASSWORD. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME, MY BROTHER'S COMPUTER WAS MINE AT ONE TIME, HE THEN PURCHASED IT FROM ME AND REGISTERED THE SPY SWEEPER SO THAT IS WHY I COULDN'T PROVIDE THE CORRECT PASSWORD.

SOLUTION; NO MATTER YOUR CONDITION, IF YOU ARE GETTING A PROMPT FOR A USER NAME AND PASSWORD AND NOTHING WORKS, THE FIRST THING YOU MUST DO IS CALL SPY SWEEPER (I MUST TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT THIS AT THE END) AND MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU USED YOUR CREDIT CARD TO BUY THE SOFTWARE THAT IT IS YOUR NAME THAT IS REGISTERED TO IT. IF YOU ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL BUYER YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS AS YOU SHOULDN'T. SO AFTER YOU DO THIS, YOU THEN REQUEST SOFTWARE FROM WEBROOT TO BE EMAILED TO YOU.. THE SOFTWARE 'WIPES ALL PREVIOUS WEBROOT INSTALLATIONS' FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE.. IT IS A 'DELETER'. WHILE STILL ON THE PHONE.. REQUEST ALSO A EMAIL LINK TO REINSTALL WEBROOT ALONG WITH YOUR PRODUCT KEY... AFTER THE DELETER, REBOOT AND NOW GO INTO YOUR EMAIL AND CLICK ON THAT 'REINSTALL' LINK.. THIS WILL START A PROGRAM THAT WILL SAY 'RUN' SO RUN THAT AND WHEN PROMPTED PUT IN YOUR REGISTERED PRODUCT KEY..

WALLA.. NOW YOU CAN EITHER CREATE A NEW (WORKING) USER NAME AND PASSWORD OF YOUR OWN OR SIMPLY CLICK CANCEL TO THE 'ONLINE BACKUP' REGISTRATION BY JUST CLICKING ON 'CANCEL' WHEN YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NO LONGER GET A PASSWORD PROMPT!! I PROMISE.. I AM NOT GETTING ONE NOW.

SO THIS PROBLEM OF BEING PROMPTED FOR A PASSWORD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GOING INTO THE REGISTRY AND DELETING ENTRIES.. NO YOU HAVE TO CALL WEBROOT AND REQUEST THESE LINKS AND FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

PHONE SUPPORT: I PROMISED TO MENTION THIS SO HERE I GO. WHEN YOU CALL WEBROOT'S FREE PHONE TECH SUPPORT YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND LISTEN TO JAZZ MUSIC FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR. DURING THE 1 HOUR WAIT YOU WILL BE ASKED OVER AND OVER TO OPT FOR THE PHONE TECH SUPPORT # THAT HAS A MUCH LESS WAIT TIME THAN THE 'FREE' PHONE TECH SUPPORT.. YOU WILL, HOWEVER, HAVE TO PAY MONEY FOR THE FAST RESPONSE. I WAITED, I JUST DID OTHER STUFF WHILE THE JAZZ PLAYED AND PLAYED.

ANOTHER OPTION IS TO HAVE WEBROOT TAKE OVER YOUR COMPUTER REMOTELY.. THIS LOVELY OTPION WILL COST YOU MORE THAN THE SPY SWEEPER PROGRAM ITSELF AT $29.99?? NO THANKS WEBROOT!

SO NOW YOU KNOW..

The only way I have found to fix this issue is to do the following:

Step 1. Uninstall Webroot Antivirus

Step 2. Reboot computer

Step 3. Open up the Windows registry by clicking on Start "Run" and type regedit and hit enter or click Run

Step 4. Go to File and Export - pick a name like registrybackup and choose the desktop as the save location

Step 5. Go to Edit and then Find Next, in the "Find what" enter Webroot then click on Find Next

Step 6. Delete entry that contain Webroot

Step 7. Repeat Steps 5 & 6 until no more entries are found

Step 8. Go to Edit and then Find Next in the "Find what" enter Spysweeper the click on Find Next *** You may not have an entry, if this is the case skip to Step 11 ***

Step 9. Delete entry that contains Spysweeper

Step 10. Repeat Steps 8 & 9 until no more entries found

Step 11. Reboot the computer

Step 12. Reinstall Webroot Antivirus

Step 13. Run Webroot Antivirus and cancel out of the Account setup wizard NOT the installation wizard. This will bring you to the main area of Webroot where you will be able to get updates, scan, etc.

This should kill the popup window.

I installed webroot spy sweeper but my computer says that I have no virus protection and webroot will not allow me any access to turn it on.

Uninstall the software from Spy Sweeper go to uninstall and look for Spy Sweeper and take it out of there. Or go to programs and see if it is an uninstall utility. I use Windows Security Essentials it is free and does all of it behind the scenes. You have to have a legal copy of windows and also pass the WGA in order to download it. The problem is people waste their money on software that is not necessary in today's computing world most of it is free and already built in or offered with Windows software operating systems. You do not need much more than this.
If you decide to load it anyway because you purchased it make sure that you go and check to see if you have anti-virus software installed that can be found in the control panel. If not you will also have to purchase external anti-virus software as well to work with this software. There are free ones to use or purchase. Your provider ISP may even have anti-virus free check your provider site to see if it comes with free anti-virus software. I would use Microsoft Security Essentials personally. It does it all removes spyware and things that are not supposed to be there. Click Here to download this free software and read about it. Hope this assists you. John

I would suspect your computer has a virus or has spyware or malware that is causing this. Restart your computer in Safe Mode and run Webroot and your other security software. If they find nothing then restart your computer and then go online and run this free scan. http://us.trendmicro.com/us/housecall/

Compatability issue

On Feb. 12, 2008, Microsoft released an update that fixed the recent compatiblity issues between Windows Vista and Webroot Antivirus/Spy Sweeper that were a result of a previous Windows Jan. 8, 2008 update.
Recommended Fix:
To fix this issue, update your copy of Windows Vista with the latest updates available as of 2/12/2008. For many users, Windows Vista will update automatically at its next scheduled time, but the update is also available as a manual download. See below for instructions on how to update Windows Vista.
We also recommend updating your copy of Webroot Antivirus/Spy Sweeper. The latest version does not experience any compatibility issues and it is generally recommended that you update your software to the latest version in order to ensure maximum security and protection of your PC.

I have a subsription with McAfee and I cannot download the software before having this webroot spy sweeper removed.I cannot find it on my computer and never had a subscription with this webroot spy...

first uninstall the webroot spy sweeper through the following steps.
1.click start
2.go to control pannel
3.open 'add or remove program'
4.a window will open wait for some time until the list is populated

5 i)in that list find webroot spy sweeper and click remove
go through the uninstall wizard and finish the uninstallation process

5 ii)if you didn't find webroot spy sweeper there then it can be a virus
You need to download a program called MalwareBytes because that searces your entire computer
, finds the virus and completely destroys it.

http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Click the green 'download now' button (don't worry - this is free) and once you've downloaded it, got the updates and done a system sweep which takes a long time but it's worth it, you should be fine. It also solves the desktop, wallpaper and screensaver hijack, too.

6. restart your computer

7.open mycomputer click search and do a search for webroot spy sweeper
delete all the files and folders regarding webroot spy sweeper

8.now download mcafee before installing mcafee uninstall MalwareBytes and restart your pc
because at a time only one antivirus software should be used

i think this solution will help you
if the problem is not fixed please inform i will suggest some other ways

Spy Sweeper with Antivirus

Spy Sweeper is for spyware and that is not the same as anti virus software..If you do not have anti virus software, you should consider a getting one of the more popular types such as McAfee or Trend PC Cillin.these are two readily available types .. It is good to have both spyware and virus protection and they are not the same.. Hope this helps you..

Webroot spy sweeper

I too have Trend PC Cillin ( anti-virus ) and Webroot Spy sweeper... I schedule sweeps at different times so there is no overlap or conflicts.. I am running windows XP Pro ( i do not like Vista... even thou I may not have any choice at some point) but I have not had any conflicts or lockups between them.. There may be some other underlying issue with your system... For what it's worth...

1 Answer

Spy sweeper not working

1- Install using this serial: SSDC-ONLN-AAAA-NNNL-NINC

Then

2- Go into the C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper

Then

3- Right click the "install.dat" file-->go to Properties--> at the bottom check the boxes "read-only" and "hidden"-->then click Apply

And finally....

4- Run SpySweeperFix.v1.1.exe

Allow SpySweeperFix.v1.1.exe to run on the next Windows start up, this gives you the definition update till 2020, otherwise, you'll just get till 2006!

Hope this helps, if not, post back.
