To update your garmin nuvi is free. All you need to do is to first downlad the webupdater on to a PC then you go to the webupdater software on your pc and then you connect your garmin nuvi to the PC.
Select the updates of your choice, whether the map updates or software update. It will bring up the latest update for you. Then you select the update and it will be installed on your garmin nuvi for you.
You cn download the webupdater from the garmin nuvi website. www.garmin.com
Or you can go to www.garmin.com, when the page is fully loaded, go the the support link, a slide will pop out, then you select what you want to update there, either the maps or software, then follow the rest of the instructions from there.

Maps for most GPS devices are updated several times a year. Your map is from 2010 and should be updated. You can go to the garmin site and pay to download and install upgraded maps or do a google search for map upgrades and you'll find some services offering lifetime upgrades for a few dollars more than the Garmin one time upgrade. I did this and have had no problems updating the maps on my Garmin Nuvi 250.

Unfortunately there are no free updates for Garmin devices they will all come at a cost. 54.95 for a Onetime Updates or you can pay 89.95 for a subscription to updates for your Garmin device. I usually recommend getting the subscription if you plan on keeping the unit 2-3 years.

If you are looking for map upgrades there are a couple options. One is to purchase the update on DVD then load it to the unit. Two Purchase a Lifetime Subscription to mapping which would allow you to update the GPS every 3 months. You can also obtain a onetime update VIA download on Garmin.com. Garmin is telling you to update your Map, its wants you to buy a New Map which cost around 50 or 60 dollars.....your unit will work find for now unless you need the new map 2011 it just has the newer streets and highways. Anything over 2 years old should have a newer Map..

With the gps Off

plug in your gps to your computer using a USB cable (most cameras connect to your computer with the same usb cable)

your computer with detect new hardware ( usb ) a pop up box will come up, minimise it

next

go to www.MyGarmin.com the Garmin site will detect your pluged-in unit and let your update your Map

It will say to download WebUpDater utility to transfer your map to your gps

Make sure you register your unit with Garmin at that time

On Garmin gps there is several ways to update your maps you can buy the sd update card, the cd, or upload it from the garmin website using a usb cord sold seperatly. the updates can range from $70 dollars to $120. I work at best buy and we carry all the updates for garmin

The only way to get a map update cheaper would be to buy the lifetime update, which lets you update your unit up to 4 times/year (by downloads from their homepage) for a fix sum only slighly more expansiver than the regular update.
By doing more than one update however, the price per update is almost half of just buying an onetime update.
