You need to have your satnav registered with garmin. Log into myGarmin and click on the myMaps tab at the top of the screen. If you don't already have a map of the Philippines click on "buy more maps" and follow the prompts. If you already have a map that you just want to update you can get details of how to update it at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps You can also get details there of how to register your satnav with garmin if you haven't already done so.
Please note that if this is not an update it's unlikely that your nuvi 255W will have enough space to hold a second map. If you're not updating or replacing a map I would advise against buying it as a second map. It is possible to install a second map to a memory card but there is a risk that it may not work. Memory cards in garmin satnavs appear to be very hit and miss. Some work and others don't for no aparent reason.
To update your maps you need to connect your satnav to a computer using a mini USB cable. The mini USB end connects into your satnav in the same socket that the car charger plugs into. You might already have one for something else that connects to your computer as many products use the same type of cable e.g. external hard drives, some digital cameras and camcorders, some phones etc. You can get details of how to update your satnav at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps
First, you will need a USB cord. You can buy one from Garmin for 15 dollars at: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1345&ra=true
To install the new maps, you'll want to run WebUpdater. You can find the link for webupdater here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
The problem was following the Garmin instructions too closely. What I found via a GPS forum was that some USB cables can be finicky and trying different USB cables may solve the problem. In my case I found I had to turn the nuvi 255W on normally during registration; then connect the USB cable to device and PC. Then the registration and download worked. The documentation is not clear on this.
Found I had the latest map; but did upgrade my firmware from 5.90 to 6.10.
Go to www.garmin.com and first, register your gps. Then you can plug it into your computer with a usb cable and download programming and map updates. Depending on what you want, there may be a fee for this. Wal-Mart also sells one-time, and lifetime update cards for all Garmin gps units.
