Question about Singer 3116 Simple

1 Answer

Stitch is uneven, not straight, and tension off on top and bottom

My Singer Simple overnight, literally, stopped stitching correctly. The stitch is slightly off center at the begining of each stitch. Then, it goes back to center when the needle goes down to finish the stitch. Also, the bottom thread can be seen coming up through the top as well as the top thread can be seen coming through the bottom. I have tried changing the tension, thread, bobbin, material, needle, everything!!! I am out of ideas!!!

On my industrial machine this was caused by the wrong size needle. the length was off just a fraction. just an idea, in case you bought generic needles or something.

I have a 1970's? singer and the top stitch is ok but the bottom stitch is very loose then binds up I have tried putting another bobbin in but nothing seems to work. Thank you

Check the threading and tension on the top thread. It is the one that affects the stitch on the bottom. It may be hung up somewhere if it's not threaded correctly or the tension might be too tight. Also double check the size of your needle and make sure it is correct for the type of fabric. Most likely it is the tension. Double check the tension by sewing a wide zig zag stitch and examining the top and under side to see if they look identical and not puckered or too loose.

There is a screw on the bobbin case which you turn clockwise to tighten but on a quarter of a turn at a time then test sew, make sure the bobbin turns antil clockwise in the bobbin case.

How to adjust tension on bottom stitch?

There are tow places where the thread tension is adjusted.

One is bobbin. This is not routinely adjusted. Just once and it is good for long time. This is done by turning the only screw on bobbin by about 1/4 turn or so at a time. Try several settings until you find he best.

the other place is the conventionally on body of the machine.

Tension of bottom stitch or top stitch are very confusing words. meaning difft things to difft pple.
All i can say is this. If u see bottom stitch run straight through loops of top thread. then either top tension is too loose or bottom too tight. and vise versa.

With top tension set to middle position adjust the bobbin to get correct stitch. Then later on all u need is to adjust only the top setting according to stitch and cloth

Tension problems

Hi, check that the thread tension knob makes only one rotation from 0 to 9 and stops at each ends, see that it moves in and out as you increase or decrease the tention, see that the small tension wire to the left of the knob is still in place, in any of these fail you need to replace/repair that assembly.

Topand bottom stitches are not even

Could be a tension issue.

Try this to see if it helps:
Remove top thread.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Start the top tension set at the midway point and then adjust.
Check that the bobbin is threaded and installed correctly.
