Acer aspire 5100 nfltr is missing error

I bought an acer aspire 5100 laptop with xp...upgraded to vista and have had problems since. I tired to restore my system and got to 95% and then it had an error and everytime I try to start I get the dreaded nfltr is missing error and no remedy to fix it. I have tried a variety of fixes but think the "hidden" partition for eRecovery maybe be gone becasue I converted the fat 32 to ntfs ....any help or suggestions I can try?

This does not help because I have no XP instal disk just restore disks and it is an XP upgraded to Vista neither restore worked. HD reformatted to NTFS

Sorry but that answer is like "buy a new PC", it doesn't really help if I am buying something. I was expecting a do it yourself or use a free utility to fix it response. If I have to buy a new os to install or take it to a shop or buy new hardware then this is not going to work for me...those are no brainers in my mind. I thought someone would tell me to hit F12 3 times and choose option C or some such thing....

The best way to cure this problem is to install a new copy of windows xp. You have ntldr missing error, that means the problem is with the os loader. If you choose to reinstall os then please try to repartition and reformat your hdd.

Before rating my post as inappropriate, you should have at least tried to get a xp installation disk. At least this much we can expect when we are giving our suggession for free.

Copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files from another computer to c:/ using the same operating system. Both of these files are located in the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. For example, C:\NTLDR and C:\NTDETECT.COM should be the locations of these files on many computers.

  • Please keep in mind that these files are hidden system files, if you need additional help with viewing hidden files in Windows please see document CH000516.
Once these files have been copied to a floppy diskette reboot the computer and copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files to the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. Below is an example of what commonly should be performed from the A:\> drive.

copy ntldr c:
copy ntdetect.com c:

After the above two files have been copied, remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

My acer 5100 laptop will not boot up. I get

you could try going to the boot menu, and choosing 'last known good', but that is probably not going to work.

you should be able to run a repair off the CD....

the file is a kernel, a neccessary file used by Windows. It may have gotten corrupted or deleted.. possibly by a virus or bad hard drive sector.

get a disc, and run repair, if that doesn't fix it, you may need to re-install a fresh copy of windows, which will over-write all your data. you may be able to boot to that upgrade CD and that may have a repair option...

good luck.

Can't get he dvd to work on my acer 5100 after xp installed

You may need to Flash the bios with the bios.
Going from Vista to XP on Acer 5100
The acer website site for the 5100 series located here http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5100.html

You can get all the XP drivers for your 5100 series there. Bios also. If the upgraded bios does not fix it then go to control panel, system, device manager, hardware and uninstall the dvd player all together. reboot. If this does not fix it go to the dvd players web site and download a FIRMWARE UPGRADE FOR IT make SURE IT IS THE RIGHT FIRMWARE FOR YOUR DVD PLAYER. Match all numbers and letter that id your drive. Good Luck. Please rate me.
