Two reasons.

1. There is air in the gas line. Power down the heater and allow it to try igniting until lockout. If it locks out, repeat the process. Most lines will clear within 4-5 attempts to ignite.

2. A plugged burner orifice. Run a small pipe cleaner in the brass fittings on the burner tray. They may have small webs in them restricting gas flow.

If the unit is a Standard (STD on the plate inside) it has a flame sensor that may also be bad. That sensor is on the end of the single wire that is cloase to the ignitor wire near the burners. Also check for a losse ground wire on the heater.

Could be inducer fan motor. On acall for heat inducer fan motor start the ignites the burner. The unit has to realize air flow. If inducer fan motor ok, check pilot assembly valve there is and adjustment screw on the valve body

Pentair 472604 Igniter Replacement MiniMax NT STD Pool and Spa Heater

The ignitor is simple to replace, It is either a spark ignitor or a Hot surface ignitor. The above link will take you to a picture of the Hot surface ignitor, it is normal held onto the bottom of the burner tray, at right about the middle, by 1 or 2 sheet metal screws.

If a Spark style ignitor/electrode, then the bottom link is the one want to look at. Again, held in place the same way as above description.

Do you have 24V at the brown wire of the gas valve? If you do then it is probably a bad gas valve.
If you don't have 24V on the brown wire it is probably the ignitor.

My minimax heater 250,000 btu heater keeps sooting up. it ran for years fine my tech. has cleaned it twice in the last six months

Thank you for posting your question here on

Check all the burners for nice bright blue flames standing 3-4" off the burners when it lights. If any are heavily orange in color you need to clean out that tube and the jet in front of that tube. If they are mostly blue but short and wispy in nature check inlet and outlet gas pressures at the gas valve to ensure there is adequate gas. Finally, be sure there is adequate air flow into the heater. Not enough combustion air can cause sooting issues as well.

New ignitor..still won't light

Clean out the pilot assemby or replace it. It is probably blocked by rust and/or spiders and is not letting enough gas (if any) through.
