Question about HP Pavilion a305w (DM181AR) PC Desktop

2 Answers

Installed a new memory now computer won't boot up.

I recently purchased a new Kingston 512MB Ram DDR and once I installed it my computer wouldn't boot up until I removed the 256MB that came with the computer. Can I use both and how can I solve this issue? I have a HP A305W. The new Ram is supposed to be compatible for pc3200, pc2700 and pc2100 well that's what the pack says!!! Can I put my 256 back in with this and how do I get my system to run with both of them????

The problem there is you need matching pairs of RAM

Example: 256mb + 256mb
512mb + 512mb

You cannot mix 2 togther.

I recently purchased Two PNY 1Gb ram to upgrade from original 512mb. When I put both 1Gb ram in the slots, the computer will not boot up. When I take one out and put the original 512 back in with the other...

I don't know your specific model, but some of the Emachines had some memory directly on the motherboard. With the 1Gb and 512Mb sticks installed, boot the machine and report how much memory the system sees. Perhaps the onboard memory is causing you to exceed the 2Gb limit.

Please post the memory size you get here with the above sticks.

Thanks,
Dan

Motherboard for compaq pcsr5109uk have upgraded to 1,5 GB this adding a 1 GB ram since doing this pc will not boot up,pc has said that the mother board has died this has only started since new ram have...

From what you have stated, the original ram memory was two sticks of 512MB.
It's PC2-5300
(DDR2 Sdram at 667MegaHertz)

When installing ram memory, and installing two sticks with one stick being larger, the larger stick of ram memory is installed in Slot 1.

This is the ram memory slot that is closest to the Processor.
(The Processor reads Slot 1 first)
On the motherboard it has DIMM 1 printed next to Slot 1.

The 1GB stick should go into Slot 1 (DIMM 1), and the 512MB stick should go into Slot 2 (DIMM 2)

Scroll down for the motherboard illustration, and photo.

Won't boot up with the original ram memory installed again?
1) What type, and size of 1GB ram memory did you install?

2) What ram memory slot did you install it in?

3) Did you follow anti-static precautions BEFORE you put your hands inside your computer, and BEFORE you took that ram memory stick out of it's protective anti-static bag?

[Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.

You may not even see it, or feel it.
Poof!
No computer.

Computer unplugged from power, computer on a table, computer case open, TOUCH the metal frame to relieve your body of Static.

{A couch, bed, or directly on a carpet floor are HIGH areas of Static]

Before you answer my questions try this;

If the two sticks of 512MB PC2-5300 are still installed, follow anti-static precautions, and remove them.

Take a pencil eraser, and clean the gold plated contact pins on the bottom of each ram module. (Stick)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Generic_DDR_Memory_%28Xytram%29.jpg

(The above example is DDR Sdram, not DDR2 Sdram. I posted the link so that the gold plated contacts are clearly shown.

DDR Sdram has 184 contact pins.
92 on each side.
DDR2 Sdram has 240 contact pins.
120 on each side)

Remove the eraser dust with air. Use a can of compressed air for computers, or air pressure from your mouth.

Reinstall the ram memory modules.

Computer unplugged from power, press the Power On button in.
Hold the button in for a count of Five seconds.
(Count 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005)

Let go of the Power On button.
Do this procedure two more times.

What you are doing is clearing CMOS Error Codes, and resetting BIOS back to the factory settings.

Plug the computer back into power.
WAIT 1 minute, then turn the computer on.

I await your findings, and answers to my questions.

Check first if the memory is loose or there are any parts that have come loose such us IDE or SATA cables, For errors you should also get warning sounds.

PC can't boot LEDs are all Amber colour and flashing.

the memory sticks are not connected properly as you are getting the beeps out of the computer when turning on...
if in case the memory cards are connected properly the system should not beep while turning it on so please try to reconnect the memory cards properly & see if you are getting the prompt"the amount of system memory has changed" coming up in that case the system is working fine.

Need to add RAM

Hello,

Located here is the actual specifications of your W3052.

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=W%20Series&model=W3052

The DDR means "double data rate", SDRAM is "synchronous dynamic random access memory" and DIMM is for "dual inline memory module". These are the way manufacturers describe the specific speed, type, and packaging of the memory. You need to get the correct combination for your computer in order for it to function properly. The PC2100 is NOT correct, at the very least it will slow your computer down, and possibly will not work at all. You should use PC2700.

If you wish to add another 512MB taking your computer to 1GB total, then you only need 1 module, a 512MB, like the one that came in the computer. Do not purchase a 1GB module expecting it to work properly with the one already there. It probably won't. If you want to max out your computer's memory taking it to 2GB, then you will need to purchase 2 each 1GB modules, and remove the existing 512MB module.

When you go to the computer store, you ask for either "one five-hundred-twelve megabyte, PC2700, DDR, SDRAM DIMM memory module" or "two one-gigabyte, PC2700, DDR, SDRAM DIMM memory modules".

The part numbers from, Kingston, one of the major add-on memory makers are shown here:

512MB = KVR333X64C25/512
1GB = KVR333X64C25/1G

Dimension 2400 is at 1.5MG - will not go to 2.0MG per manual!

yeah thats a normal issue with the dimension 2400 as the older bios only supports a max of 1gb of memory you will need to go to the dell website which ive linked below and get the bios update which will give you support up to 2gb-pc3200 ddr memory

Gateway sb-4100-b won't recognize new memory

Check the owners manual of your computer for the correct installation of 2 sticks of memory, this can be critical on computers with 2 banks of 2 slots, it will also tell you the maximum ram that will work. If you do not have the manual, go to the manufactures website and then go to the support link, and browse for memory installation. BPCS
